The Supervisory Medical Supply Technician is responsible for Distributing and prioritizing workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations. They ensure Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Sterile Processing Service (SPS) mandates are followed during the performance of workflow and assigns tasks as necessary to provide new employees with the experience and training required to perform decontamination of scopes and instrumentation in the work area.

If you ARE NOT a current, permanent VA employee or Federal employee from another agency, you should apply using announcement: CBST-12136271-23-AC Duties include, but are not limited to: Sterile Storage and Distribution: Supervises and evaluates the operations/services of the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) to ensure that all activities are conducted in a timely/cost effective manner and in accordance with organizational values, internal policies, standards/procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements. Modifies work-flow processes and auditing functions as necessary to improve performance, productivity, and customer service. Ensures that work unit activities, productivity and quality indicators are tracked and documented. Trouble shoots emergent issues and resolves per established guidelines. Ensures that appropriate automated systems are maintained. Produces reports on key performance indices and other significant benchmarking metrics as required. Collaborates with other departments to address and resolve problems. Share information and enhance overall effectiveness/productivity. Schedules, supervises, and evaluates the work of assigned staff engaged in sterilizing/processing/equipment/supplies and in setting up surgical instrument trays in accordance with established procedures. Assists in identifying adequate staffing levels for appropriate coverage to meet budgetary and operational objectives. Adjust staffing as needed during shifts to meet departmental needs. Assists with interviews, staffing, and other personnel decisions. Orients employees and hold regular staff meeting. Develops and delivers ongoing staff education. Approves time cards, communicates performance standards and evaluates performance. Counsels employees, providing constructive feedback and recognizing results achieved. Participates in performance management activities. Interprets and ensures compliance with applicable regulatory agreements both internal and external to include standards and requirements. Receives and reviews audits and survey/report findings to determine appropriate changes or corrective action required. Keeps abreast of changing regulatory requirements/regulations and competitive industry practices impacting assigned functions, including organizational initiatives/changes; monitors impact on existing activities and identifies/implements effective response solutions while maintaining acceptable service levels and work quality. Monitors and assess current operation/services to identify opportunities and provides recommendation to Chief of Sterile Processing for performance/process improvements initiatives. Monitors and assures compliance with safety, regulatory, sterility standards, and inventory control procedures. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part. Experience and/or Education Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; OR Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Grade Requirements: GS-8 Requirements Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: 1. Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds. 2. Ability to direct staff and manage tasks to be completed. 3. Ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of RME. 4. Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues. Note: KSAs must be clearly reflected in your resume under description of duties to be found qualified for this position/grade level. Preferred Experience: 1-2 years of experience of Sterile Processing, Instrument Reprocessing, Decontamination Preparation & Packing, Sterilization. Additional preference will be given to those with supervisory experience. Preferred certification in IAHCSMM prior to hire. References: VA Handbook 5005/76, Part II Appendix G47, Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-8. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-8 Physical Requirements: Physical Demands: Physical aspects associated with work required of this assignment are typical for the occupation, see Duties section for essential job duties of the position. May require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. May be required to wear personal protective equipment and undergo annual TB screening or testing as conditions of employment. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office/clinic setting with minimal risks that requires normal safety precautions; the area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. However, the work environment requires someone with the ability to handle several tasks at once in sometimes stressful situations.
