The primary purpose of the position is to to work on construction and installation of temporary exhibitions, permanent collection galleries, and/or other special projects at the National Gallery of Art. This position is in the Design Department under the direct supervision of the Head of the Exhibits Shop.

Duties

Analyze small scale construction plans of exhibitions and permanent collection spaces. Prepare finished installations, construction partitioning, ceilings, panels, cases, cabinetry, and other elements based on the original concept. Consult with supervisors, designers, and production coordinators, providing recommendations for changes and improvements when necessary. Safely executes demolition of partitions, ceilings, cases and other components, while exercising sustainable work practices. Maintains a clean and safe work environment. Accurately replicate existing architectural moldings and construct historical moldings required for installations using shapers, table and band saws, and routers. Determine the type of materials (wood, metal, plastic, glass) required for fabricating cases, panels, graphics, and other complex exhibition components. Estimate material quantities and plan the fabrication and installation schedule accordingly. Determine sound and efficient construction methods for fabricating installations and their components, utilizing various special techniques to achieve high-quality results. Fabricate cradles, inclines, and inserts from various materials to support works of art. Conduct research and develop new fabricating methods to address specific installation challenges. Display constant attentiveness and care when working around and directly with works of art, ensuring compliance with condition requirements of loans, and safeguarding the safety of the art pieces. Install and maintain clear components, including acrylic vitrines and two- and three-dimensional acrylic items. Perform tasks such as cutting, machining, forming, cementing, cleaning, glazing, repairing, removing scratches, finishing, and annealing acrylic materials to achieve the desired final product. Fabricate and install other elements required for exhibition installation, including surface finishing of exhibition background graphics and accessories. Work with various adhesives for mounting various materials and hanging and cropping photographic images. Construct proper structures, including using concrete, to support exterior sculptures, graphics, and exhibit casework. Stay updated with new materials and techniques used in exhibition installation. Utilize unusual and specially ordered materials efficiently and effectively to avoid monetary and time losses.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1010-11. A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience equivalent in responsibility to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service, working as a carpenter on the construction and installation of temporary exhibitions, permanent collection galleries, and/or other special projects in a museum. Demonstrate the ability to solve special problems related to installations, structural challenges, and security concerns for works of art. Ability to foster teamwork and effective communication to ensure successful project execution. Ability to interpret scale details from AutoCAD, Sketchup, and/or hand drawings. Works collaboratively with other departments on projects as directed. Ability to understand and perform various complicated construction techniques using special types of materials for complicated assignments. Shows constant attentiveness and care, ensuring compliance with loan requirements and art safety. Proficient in preparing and installing exhibition elements from construction plans, using various materials and techniques to achieve high-quality results.
