The Harry S. Truman Veterans' Hospital in Columbia, Missouri, is recruiting for an advanced level Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiac Catheterization).
Duties
Functions as a lead CCL Technician for a group of CCL Technicians. Provides a full range of cardiac radiologic treatment procedures, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the CCL, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. CCL Technician has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the angiography areas. He/she works closely with the technicians, interventionalists, electrophysiologists, nurses, clinicians, and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results, and patient satisfaction.
Employees at this grade are to be qualified to provide services at an advanced level with highly specialized skills in the areas of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Electrophysiology Lab and the Hybrid OR Suites and inventory management. Additionally, this employee is responsible for maintaining all data and research protocols for cardiac procedures and investigations as well as writing policies, procedures, and protocols for a cardiac catheterization laboratory.
This position is a Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiac Catheterization) who has demonstrated advanced training in Interventional Cardiac Catheterization procedures; Electrophysiology and mapping procedures; and procedures performed in a Hybrid OR Suite.
This position supports the clinical and administrative components of the Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Labs by performing additional duties such as inventory management; staff scheduling and/or assignments; staff and student training and mentoring; quality improvement program initiatives, scrubbing, circulating, monitoring and other duties that support the immediate and ongoing needs of the department. Additionally, this member of the team will be responsible for attending monthly CPRC meetings and speaking to new items needed within the cath lab. They will act as a superuser for cath lab specific monitoring equipment and will ensure that inventory in the GE CCU system is up to date and organized.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this grade level.
Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition.
English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). All persons employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.
Grade Determinations:
GS-10 MIT (Cardiac Catheterization)
Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge required to provide the most complex cardiac catheterization technician services and/or supervisory knowledge, skills, and abilities.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques.
*Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program.
*Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations.
Preferred Experience:
7-10 Years of Cath Lab experience.
Knowledge of EP and IR cases
Background in SCM

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-10. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-10.
Physical Requirements: While performing duties of this job the Cardiac Catheterization Technician is frequently required to stand walk, bend and reach. May require long periods of standing and wearing of lead apron, gloves, mask, and gown and eye shields during diagnostic procedures. Must be able to lift and/or move over 50 pounds. They must have good manual dexterity and keyboarding skills. Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken and written word. Must be able to view and read information on computer screens.
