The echocardiographer works in coordination with the cardiology team at the Truman VA Medical Center in Columbia, MO, which is a Complexity Level 1c facility in order to provide ultrasound imaging of the heart for cardiac diagnostic testing. The echocardiographer should possess the ability to work with, learn new techniques as the field of diagnostic echocardiography grows and participation in quality improvement activities.
Duties
Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography) Job Duties:
Duties include but not limited to for the Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography):
Performs high level cardiovascular testing with cardiology physicians and performs transthoracic echocardiograms, transesophageal echocardiograms and stress echocardiograms.
Specialized knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology and biology, ultrasound physics, and cardiac sonography.
Is fluent in the use and operation of the diagnostic equipment to provide adequate imaging of 2D, 3D, Doppler, Mmode imaging of the heart and associated structures.
Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with patients and employees to help perform procedures in the care of cardiac patients.
Specific knowledge in proper and approved cleaning of the equipment is necessary.
Ability to inventory and coordinate the ordering of supplies necessary for conducting echocardiograms.
Work with biomedical engineering to maintain all cardiac ultrasound equipment. echocardiographer should ensure timely transfer of diagnostic images to the reporting server for inpatient and outpatient exams.
Ability to use word processing software and data entry software (Excel) to execute several functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files, activating printers, formatting reports, letters, memoranda, and copying imaging data for inhouse or out-of-house providers according to VAMC regulations.
Ability to use the Veterans health Information and Technology Architecture (VistA) to access information in the medical center computer system.
Ability to perform carotid duplex scans is desired but not required

Basic Requirements:

Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 abd GS-5 levels.
Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition.
Preferred Experience: At least two years of experience, but not required, in performing a full range of echocardiographic procedures including transthoracic echocardiograms, transesophageal echocardiograms, and exercise and pharmacological stress echocardiograms. Incumbent must have knowledge is sterile processes and be able to assist with pericardiocentesis, intra-op and Cath lab echocardiographic procedures. Incumbent is expected to perform the full range of echocardiographic procedures and provide results for clinical diagnosis.
Grade Determinations:
GS-09:
Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This experience must demonstrate possession of the knowledge required in order to provide medical instrument technician services in the functional specialties supervised. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques.
*2 Knowledge of Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and other regulatory requirements.
3 Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
*4. Ability to manage and supervise employees
*5 Ability to provide or provide for staff development and training.
