This position is located in the Building Maintenance Shop of the Maintenance and Operations Section of Facility Management Service, Phoenix VAHCS. Incumbent performs work consisting of the installation, repair and preventative maintenance inspections (PMI) of all hospital locks, door closers, (hydraulic, mechanical, electric) panic hardware and exit devices, as well as various other items of building hardware.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Investigates and repairs malfunctions, adjusts and repairs springs, levers, tumblers, pin tumblers and combination locks.
Dismantles pin tumblers and replaces work pins and changes the makeup of tumblers by re-arranging spacers & shims, He/she also cuts new keys using code machines, code discs and duplicating machines.
Installs, repairs and maintains electronic equipment such as electronic keying devices in the hospital High Risk Security Areas such as OI&T, Pharmacy, Warehouse, Canteen area and Agent Cashier.
Manufactures substitute parts when necessary to modify locking devices for special security systems, especially in the High Risk Security Areas of the hospital as well as maintenance and repair and PMI in the areas.
Improvises trade techniques to adapt locking mechanisms for uses to which they were not specifically designed or to hamper or prevent the use of standard neutralization techniques.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Seldom requires lifting or carrying of items weighing in excess of 15 pounds. Frequently stands, stoops, bends, kneels and works in awkward positions when installing and opening locks and emergency exit hardware on-site. May be required to lift security containers weighing up to 50 pounds and heaver weights with assistance. You will be working in an environment that contains asbestos.
