Duties
This Maintenance Mechanic position is assigned to the Facilities Division of Big Bend National Park and directly reports to the Supervisor for Castolon Maintenance. Most of the time for this position will be spent maintaining utility systems, housing units and other facilities buildings in Castolon. This position will respond to work request performing maintenance operations and repairs. The incumbent will be responsible for grounds keeping, irrigating, and mowing.
The incumbent will make repairs to housing and building interiors and exteriors, which may include roofing, painting, carpentry, electrical, masonry and plumbing work. This position will also maintain landscapes, campgrounds, and yards. Will work from oral and written instructions, work orders, building and/or utility plans, blueprints, and sketches to complete installations, modifications, and repairs independently and assist others.
Operates motor vehicles and performs pre-vehicle operation inspection such as fluid levels, lights, brakes, and operational procedures, greasing moving parts, changing oil, fuel and air filters, cleaning and washing vehicles, and minor parts changing repairs. Operating various pieces of equipment such as skid steer loaders, front end loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, chippers, and chainsaws. The incumbent will be exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors. Will be exposed to heat, biting insects, dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with hazardous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc.
School District/Day Care Information:
San Vicente public school (SVISD) is a state-accredited elementary (Pk-8) located at Panther Junction. The daycare program is CURRENTLY FREE, subject to change. SVISD has a 3:1 student to teacher ratio and is an "A" rated academic curriculum with a variety of extracurricular activities including archery, STEM, gifted and talented, summer programs, and a computer lab.

Area Information:
Big Bend National Park encompasses 801,000 acres of the Chihuahuan Desert with more biodiversity than almost any other national park and a dark sky designation. There are 250 people in the park community including NPS, Concession, Border Patrol, Postal Service, and School staff, and their families in 4 housing areas.
Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, photography, backcountry camping, bicycling, and river rafting. An active employee/community association sponsors social events throughout the year.
Elevation in the park varies from 7825 to 1850 ft. The climate is generally pleasant with hot summers (90-110+ degrees F.) and mild winters (30-50 degrees F.). The gateway town of Terlingua has a state-accredited high school (no bus service), lodging, restaurants, hardware store, small grocery and gift stores, churches and a bank. Lajitas has limited shopping, lodging, restaurants, golf course and churches. Alpine, Texas (100 miles from PJ) has most necessities, including supermarkets, variety of stores, a hospital, pharmacies, churches, a movie theater, and a university. The nearest larger cities are Midland/Odessa (225 miles) and El Paso (325 miles).
