The position is an Interdisciplinary position. Incumbent will be selected under a series for position of Geographer, Natural Resources Specialist, Soil Conservationist, or Soil Scientist, working title of Highly Erodible Land and Wetland Conservation Specialist. Position assigned to the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), State Office, and Soil Sciences Staff. The NRCS mission is to provide resources to farmers and landowners to aid them with conservation.

Duties

Make highly erodible land (HEL) and wetland conservation (WC) preliminary technical determinations (PTD) and assist with reconsiderations and final technical determinations (FTD). Serves to assists in making Highly Erodible Land and Wetland Compliance technical determinations, which are conducted in compliance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures. Provides technical advice and assistance to NRCS field, area, and state professional and administrative personnel in interpreting imagery, establishing history, and making technical determinations consistent. Makes wetland determinations following procedures as outlined by the state's local operating procedures. Works with NRCS officials to recommend action(s) to correct deficiencies and make suggested improvements in local policies, practices, and procedures in the areas of geography, soil conservation, soil science and natural resource management.

Education

Basic Requirement for the Soil Conservationist - 0150 Series:
Degree: Bachelor's or higher degree in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.
OR
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Requirement for the Soil Conservationist - 0401 Series:
Degree: Bachelor's or higher degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Requirement for the Soil Conservationist - 0457 Series:
Degree: Bachelor's or higher degree in soil conservation or natural resource discipline such as agronomy, soil science, forestry, agricultural education, agricultural engineering or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours in natural resource or agricultural field, including at least 12 semester hours in a combination of soils and crops or plant science. Of the 12 semester hours, a minimum of 3 semester hours must have been in soils and 3 semester hours in crops or plant science.
OR
Combination of education and experience: at least 30 semester hours in one or more of the disciplines such as agronomy, soil science, forestry, agricultural education, agricultural engineering or a closely related, including at least 12 semester hours in combination of soils and crops or plant science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Of the 12 semester hours, a minimum of 3 semester hours must have been in soils and 3 semester hours in crops or plant science.

Basic Requirement for the Soil Conservationist - 0470 Series
Degree: Bachelor's or higher degree in soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility.
OR
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field. In addition to courses in the major and related fields, a typical college degree would have included courses that involved analysis, writing, critical thinking, research, etc. These courses would have provided an applicant with skills and abilities sufficient to perform progressively more responsible work in the occupation. Therefore, creditable experience should have demonstrated similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the work of the occupation.
