The incumbent of this versatile position provides a variety of services to several units of the Assistant Director (AD) Office at Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System (NWIHCS). Employee's duties include working with the eligibility clerks, telephone operators, travel clerks, HIMS scanner, Release of Information clerks or other area within the AD Office. A recruitment incentive is authorized for highly qualified applicants.

Duties

Duties for this position include but are not limited to: Employee operates agency telephone system to receive and connect incoming and outgoing calls. Program Support Assistants are required to monitor and respond to all alarms contained within the Office Operations area to include but not limited to Fire, Blood Bank, Generator, Elevator, Bathrooms, Cryo Freezers, Nuclear Reactor as well as respond to Code Blue, RRT, etc. Interviews incoming caller to determine the proper routing of the call. Routes the caller to the appropriate department and/or services after determining the proper department or extension. Operates the installation paging system. Maintains and updates facility telephone directory, insuring that entries are processed in a timely manner. Pro­actively review listings for errors, new employee and staff that have left taking appropriate actions. Employee works with the Enrollment and Eligibility clerks. Primarily responsible for the intake, administrative processes, and outcomes for Veterans and beneficiaries applying for medical services with NWI or any of its CBOCs. Initiates and completes all administrative processing of requests and forms, including but not limited to applications for care, financial statements, means tests, copay tests, etc. Knowledge of appropriate VA rules, regulations, laws, policies, guidelines, and Veteran's rights to due process are necessary requirements. Advises patients on national VA Enrollment, the Uniform Benefits Package, and non-medical benefits. Reviews and researches numerous and voluminous medical reports from VA and Non-VA health care facilities; determines which documents are to be included in the electronic medical record obtaining guidance from providers and/or Medical Record committee as necessary. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4:00pm Telework: VA supports the use of telework as a way to help attract and retain talented individuals in public service, increase worker productivity, and better prepare the agency to operate during emergencies. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/29/2023. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Program Support Assistant - Whole Health Program Assistant at the full performance level (GS-5), and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes: experience where you were responsible for providing administrative support; collecting, compiling and tracking data and information; processing documents and reports; establishing, updating and maintaining office files and records; performing automation duties using such software applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail, desktop publishing, calendar, database and/or graphics; answering telephones, referring visitors, and providing information. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed four (4) years of education above the high school level in any field which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond the second year. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Customer Service (Clerical/Technical)Emergency ManagementOperating SystemsStress Tolerance Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work is usually sedentary but may involve some standing and walking to consult directories and manuals. May be required to carry 10-15 or more pounds of records for a short distance.
