About the Position: The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers' New Orleans District is one of 41 Army Corps districts worldwide and one of six districts in the Corps' Mississippi Valley Division (MVD). The District provides for navigation, flood and hurricane risk reduction, environmental stewardship, and other water resources needs to benefit the people of southern Louisiana and the nation. The offices are located in the uptown area of New Orleans overlooking the Mississippi River.

Duties

Works with the Water Control Data Systems System Administrator (WCDS Sys-Admin) on the development and implementation of scripts for data quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), data acquisition, gage decoding, and data processing. Prepares hydrologic, water quality and climatological data/tabulations for various hydrologic and water management investigations and studies in connection with water control, flood, and drought. Utilizes automated systems such as Facilities Equipment Maintenance (FEM) system for the scheduling and maintenance of the Lower Mississippi River and Tributaries (LMRT) Branch vessels, motors, generators, and equipment. Obtains water levels and takes discharge measurements during high/low flow periods to develop historical data and assist engineers in the planning design, construction, and operation of a wide range of navigation, flood control, recreation projects.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position may be subject to a one-year probationary period.
  • Possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
  • Possess or obtain and maintain a valid USACE Boat Operators license or U.S. Coast Guard License within six months of appointment.
  • Drug testing is required for this position.
  • Physical is required for this position.
  • Incumbent may be required to travel (TDY) 10% or less each year.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 60 lbs.

OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Hydrology and Water Resources Science, Water Resources Engineering, or Water, Wetlands, and Marine Resources Management. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. Specialized Experience for the GS-08: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Assisting in the operation and /or maintenance of equipment related to hydrology such as stream gaging instrumentation AND 2) Conducting field investigations such as surveying to monitor existing gage structures AND 3) Compiling hydrologic field data for use in reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Hydrology and Water Resources Science, Water Resources Engineering, or Water, Wetlands, and Marine Resources Management. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. Specialized Experience for the GS-09: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Performing the operation and /or maintenance of equipment related to hydrology such as stream gaging instrumentation AND 2) Conducting field investigations to monitor existing gage structures and/or make recommendations on proposed gage structures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Hydrology and Water Resources Science, Water Resources Engineering, or Water, Wetlands, and Marine Resources Management. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Specialized Experience for the GS-10: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Performing the operation and /or maintenance of equipment related to hydrology such as stream gaging instrumentation AND 2) Conducting field investigations to monitor existing gage structures and/or make recommendations on proposed gage structures AND 3) Verifying hydrologic data for completeness. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). Specialized Experience for the GS-11: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Performing the operation and /or maintenance of equipment related to hydrology such as stream gaging instrumentation AND 2) Conducting field investigations to monitor existing gage structures and/or make recommendations on proposed gage structures AND 3) Verifying hydrologic data for completeness AND 4) Analyzing hydrologic data for use in reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).
