This position is assigned to the Maintenance Group of Engineering Service. The incumbent serves primarily of as a gardener, throughout the facility as assigned. Facilities include inpatient care, outpatient care, nursing home care and various administrative support buildings that range from 1 to 65 years old. Incumbent is expected to have skills in gardening and landscape maintenance and upkeep.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Performs professional gardening work concerned with the maintenance and improvement of the 18.8 acres at this Medical Center and is specifically involved with the culture of its existing and proposed trees, shrubs, lawns, flower beds and interior plantings.
- Tasks necessary to maintain the landscape at this facility in a healthy, disease-free and attractive condition.
- Responsible for the proper operation, storage and maintenance of equipment such as commercial pressure washers, power lawn mowers, edger's, trimmers, pruners, weed eaters, sprayers, and miscellaneous hand tools, including but not limited to shovels, spades, rakes, hoes shears, gardening saws, chain saws, etc.
- Performs pressure washing driveways, building exteriors, sidewalks, exterior "welcome mats" railings and other miscellaneous landscape features and adornments to maintain aesthetics and cleanly appearance.
- Performs trench digging, minor sprinkler head/ risers repair work, raking, and other duties associated with normal lawn and flower bed maintenance.
- Maintains accurate, up-to-date records on work performed, ensuring areas when appropriate, are cleaned on a consistence schedule.
- Responsible for moving equipment and picking up and dropping off supplies and materials.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work will be performed over 18.8 acres and, as such, requires frequent walking and the use of atractor for transportation of equipment and materials. Frequent bending, stooping and standing are required due to the nature of the work. The laborer will climb ladders to prune, plant material or to place Christmas lights. He/she will be required to lift heavy objects such as fertilizer, salt, plant material and maneuver loaded wheelbarrows. The majority of work is done outdoors. The laborer will be subject to discomfort from long periods of heat and humidity, cold, wind, rain, and will perform responsibilities with minimum interruption under these conditions. He/ she will be exposed to chemical sprays and dusts. He/she will be provided protective clothing and equipment such as uniforms, gloves, respirator, safety shoes and boots. During periods of extreme weather, such as heavy rain or severe heat, the incumbent may be given assignments to assist other members of the section in moving materials and equipment, shop maintenance and other tasks which may be outside the range of gardening.
