This position is assigned to the Maintenance Group of Engineering Service at the VA Medical Center in Fresno, CA. The Gardener position performs professional gardening work concerned with the maintenance and improvement of the 18.8 acres at this Medical Center and is specifically involved with the culture of its existing and proposed trees, shrubs, lawns, flower beds and interior plantings.
Duties
Major Duties:
Maintains landscape in a healthy, disease-free and attractive condition;
Provides corrective action for problems involving plant management, insect and disease control for exterior and interior based plants based on the particular species;
Determines when corrective action is needed to improve health, vigor and appearance of plants by fertilizing, pruning, transplanting, pest control, etc.;
Performs power/pressure washing building exteriors, sidewalks, exterior "welcome mats" railings and other misc. landscape features or adornments to maintain aesthetics and cleanly appearance;
Ensures proper operation, storage and maintenance of equipment such as commercial pressure washers, power lawn mowers, edger's, trimmers, pruners, weed eaters, sprayers, and miscellaneous hand tools, including but not limited to shovels, spades, rakes, hoes, shears, gardening saws, chain saws, etc.;
Performs maintenance, cleanliness and aesthetics of exterior outbuildings;
Performs trench digging, minor sprinkler head/risers repair work, raking, etc.;
Maintains accurate, up-to-date records on word performed, ensuring areas are cleaned on a consistent schedule;
Conducts pickup and deliveries within the facility grounds;
Skilled in operating powered vehicles such as sedans, pickup trucks, wheelchair vans and passenger vans;
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm (May vary based on the needs of the facility)

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have the ability to perform the following duties of the Gardener without more than normal supervision: performing a wide variety of grounds keeping work; maintaining landscapes in a healthy, disease-free and attractive condition; using equipment such as commercial pressure washers, power lawn mowers, edger's, trimmers, pruners, weed eaters, sprayers, and miscellaneous hand tools.
DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: In addition, applicants to this vacancy must possess a current, valid state driver's license. Please DO NOT upload a copy of your license at this time. If an interview is requested, you may be required to provide a copy of your current, valid, and unrestricted state driver's license at that time.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires frequent walking and the use of a tractor for transportation of equipment and materials. Frequent bending, stooping, and standing are required due to the nature of the work. The person in this position will climb ladders to prune, plant material or to place Christmas lights. He/she will be required to lift heavy objects such as fertilizer, salt, plant material and maneuver loaded wheelbarrows.
WORK CONDITIONS: The majority of work is done outdoors and will be subject to discomfort from long periods of heat and humidity, cold, wind, rain, and will perform responsibilities with minimum interruption under these conditions. He/ she will be exposed to chemical sprays and dusts. He/she will be provided protective clothing and equipment such as uniforms, gloves, respirator, safety shoes and boots. During periods of extreme weather, such as heavy rain or severe heat, the person in this position may be given assignments to assist other members of the section in moving materials and equipment, shop maintenance and other tasks which may be outside the range of gardening.
