This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for certain personnel of the DoD workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties
Assist journeyman mechanics in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of refrigeration units.
Participate in the disassembly and overhaul of commercial and domestic refrigeration units, and the maintenance and repair of ventilation equipment, air conditioning and compressor units.
Assist in maintaining, troubleshooting, and testing or replacing heating systems, which include oil and hot air furnaces, water heaters, space heaters, flame safeguard controls, burners components, fans, and motors.
Service heating systems by replacing filters, cleaning strainers and, adjusting dampers.
Remove asbestos containing materials in accordance with Public Works standard operating procedures.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
- This position may be required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime to include weekends and holidays.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Worker ~ without more than normal supervision. Must have the ability to perform common maintenance on equipment in large facilities, changing filters, cleaning strainers. Ability to troubleshoot and replace heating systems and replace defective parts such as thermostats, switches, fuel cutoff apparatus, burners, fuel feed and flame safeguard controls. Work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Stoops, stretches, bends, kneels for long periods of time and works in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. Equipment worked on is large and must be moved in and out of specific locations. Frequently sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier. Weight handling equipment is available when handling large units, up to 6000 lb. Ladders, scaffolds and platforms may be used when working on large systems or roofs. Must be able to distinguish basic or shades of colors to prevent risk of electrical shock when wiring equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside under all weather conditions. Exposed to possibility of broken bones from falls from ladders or scaffolds. Requires wearing of protective safety equipment (respirators, shoes, glasses, ear protection). Possibility of burns and/or electrocution when working on electrical equipment (24 to 460 volts). May be called upon to perform asbestos abatement, encapsulation and repair.
