This position is a member of the Emergency Department team performing a variety of examination, diagnostic procedures and clerical duties.
Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Receives requests or instructions for procedures.
Interprets request or instructions for medical or healthcare personnel.
Performs as technician in charge of office.
Receives assignments for a variety of difficult examinations.
Obtains and documents patients' vital signs.
Performs venipuncture to obtain serum blood samples and blood cultures as ordered according to policy and procedures.
Collects, labels and sends laboratory specimens as ordered according to policy and procedures.
Maintains charts and records, filing lab requisitions, placing lab results on correct charts and copying records as needed.
Orders and maintains supplies.
Sets up and adjusts specialized equipment.
Assists medical staff with or performs diagnostic procedures such as EKG used to diagnose medical conditions.
Performs a range of diagnostic tests and procedures.
Manages administrative functions for the office.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: All shifts, rotating nights, weekends, and holidays.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the following requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in Federal service that has required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: performing both clerical and clinical duties in a medical/healthcare environment; answering and directing phone calls; scheduling appointments; documenting medical records; taking and recording vital signs; and collecting and labeling specimens. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit. ~OR~
Half a year of graduate education (usually 9 semester hours) that is directly related to the work of this position. One full year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Transcripts required. ~OR~
An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. Transcripts required, and experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit.
Preferred Experience: Direct patient care in an emergency department.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily physically active and requires extensive and prolonged standing, walking, bending, lifting and carrying of light items, pushing stretcher, wheelchair, mobile equipment. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work requires heavy lifting of equipment or patients. As an employee certification in Preventive Management of Disturbed Behavior (PMDB), they are the first line of defense for patients who disturb the culture of safety.
