The Dental Laboratory Technician will be assigned to the Dental Service, VA Medical Center, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, West Palm Beach, FL.
Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Performs all phases in the design, fabrication, and repair of all types of dental and maxillofacial appliances.
Carries out administrative and educational activities required to coordinate and manage activities in the dental laboratory.
Designs, fabricates, and repairs highly complex fixed partial dentures and single crown restorations made of gold, porcelain, acrylic, porcelain fused to gold and all combinations thereof; complete dentures, and removable partial dentures made of acrylic, chrome, and combinations thereof.
Works with the oral and maxillofacial surgeon in the development of surgical stents and other intraoral maxillofacial prostheses related to trauma surgery and ablative surgery for head and neck cancer.
Performs teaching assignments associated with the dental assistants and, at times, staff dentists. Trainees are instructed in methods of solving a variety of problems related to the fabrication and repair of dental appliances and are introduced to new laboratory materials.
Participates, along with the periodontist, oral surgeon and prosthodontist in cooperative studies involving new implant systems as well as precious, non-precious metal and porcelain studies.
Coordinates operational maintenance program of laboratory equipment.
Ensures that the laboratory is an orderly, clean, and safe working environment.
Stores, maintains records, and accounts for precious metals.
Exercises expertise in operation and maintenance, and skill in the use of various tools and instruments used in investing, casting metal, processing plastics, and firing porcelain is required.
Maintains a thorough knowledge of the theory and skill in use of dental articulators, surveyors, and analyzers is also required.
Adheres to the various regulations and policies concerning the supply, maintenance, personnel, and other administrative aspects of the dental laboratory in order coordinate his/her production at acceptable levels.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm

Qualifications
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-9: having at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-8) in the Federal Service that has given me the knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Dental Laboratory Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Qualifying specialized experience includes: use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; and construction of dental prosthetic appliances.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE GS-9: successfully completed at least one and one-half (11/2) years of graduate level education with course work or an internship that is directly related to the work of the (i.e., dentistry, dental hygiene, dental technology) position. One (1) year of full-time graduate education is the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, eighteen (18) semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one (1) year of full-time study requirement. COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GS-9: having equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience, as described above, may be used to meet total experience requirements. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. The Dental Laboratory Technician is required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, lab coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields to moderate risks, or to follow procedures for minimizing risk. The Dental Laboratory Technician is required to take special precaution as prescribed by the Laboratory Safety and Chemical Hygiene Manual. Adherence to safety and Universal precautions and use of protective gear are mandatory to reduce occupational risk factors.
