This position is located within the Dental Service of the V.A. Medical Center, West Palm Beach, FL. The Dental Laboratory, Technician utilizes a thorough knowledge of oral anatomy, dental materials, and an advance degree of knowledge, skills and abilities in all phases of dental laboratory procedures and participates in the design and fabrication of advanced maxillofacial prostheses, full-mouth reconstruction, and implant supported prostheses and obscuration devices.

Duties

Major Duties Include (but not limited to): Keeps working areas clean and organized. Prepares occlusion wax rims for inter-occlusal records on stabilized bases. Stores, maintains records, and accounts for precious metals. Technical knowledge of the porcelains, alloys, chemicals, materials, a metals used in dental laboratories. Technical knowledge, skill and artistic ability to reproduce tooth shades, stains, and hues, and arrangement of artificial teeth so that the appliance meets esthetic, phonetic and functional requirement. Follows manufacturer's recommendations and Reusable Medical Equipment (RME), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Dental Equipment (critical, semi-critical, non-critical items). Keeps an updated maintenance schedule of the dental laboratory equipment. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/08/2023. GS-09 Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-08. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: GS-09 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-08 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials. Use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment. Use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers. Construction of dental prosthetic appliances. OR, GS-09 Education (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a degree that is directly related to the work of the Dental Laboratory Technician position. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. NOTE: Licensed professional dentists will be considered qualified for any grade level if they have, in the aggregate, the required experience in dental laboratory procedures. OR, GS-09 Combination (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience directly related to the work of the Dental Laboratory Technician position and graduate education beyond One and a half years (27 semester hours). NOTE: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study; if that number cannot be obtained from the transcript, 18 semester hours will be considered as one full academic year of graduate study. Physical Requirements: The work of this position requires bending and utilizing arms, hands, and fingers in the very precise manner needed for the demands of dental technology. Visual acuity and color discrimination is very important because of the exacting requirements of the work. The ability to lift 50 pounds is required. Safety clothing/equipment and compliance with safety regulations is required to minimize the hazard involved in the fabrication of prosthesis appliances.
