This position is located in Glacier National Park, in the Visitor and Resource Protection Division.

Duties
Organizes work of Ranger Program, sets priorities, and determines resource requirements; determines short- or long-term goals and strategies to achieve them; coordinates with other organizations or parts of the organization to accomplish goals; monitors progress and evaluates outcomes.
Provides the park Law Enforcement program oversight and provides technical advice to the Chief Park Ranger, Supervisory Rangers, and field staff. Incumbent is relied upon as an authority and leader within the organization regarding plans, direction, and coordination of Law Enforcement activities.
Provides Emergency Services program oversight and ensures implementation of programs in Search and Rescue, Emergency Medical Services, and Structural Fire, or a combination there-of.
Establishes and maintains working relationships with personnel of other Federal and non-Federal law enforcement and emergency services agencies.
Physical Demands: The incumbent may be required to perform physically rigorous assignments. The work may require physical exertion, such as regular and recurring long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces; mountainous terrain; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activity; carrying of equipment weighing 50 pounds or less; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as fire packs, saddles and rope bags. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average agility and dexterity. Mandatory physical fitness and medical standards apply to the incumbent of this position. Physical fitness requirements in order to maintain a law enforcement commission must be met prior to and on a continuing basis during employment.
Working Conditions: The work environment is primarily sedentary in an office setting. Fieldwork may involve periodic exposure to moderate risks or discomforts such as low temperatures, high winds, adverse weather conditions, falling limbs or trees; and similar situations. Employees may require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts or machines, with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals, blood borne pathogens, etc. Incumbent may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, gloves, helmets, or shields.
Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. Must currently possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to obtain a valid Type I National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission, or equivalent, by 09/27/2023. More information can be found in the 'Education' section of this job announcement.
Must have a current, valid State Driver's License by 09/27/2023.
Applicants must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position.
Examples of specialized experience could include: leading a complex Visitor and Resource Protection operation encompassing front and back-country law enforcement, emergency medical services, structural fire, wildland fire, dispatch, fee collection, and permitting operations; interpreting regulations and policy directives related to law enforcement and natural resource protection that included evaluating law enforcement program activities based on funding to determine objectives, amount and location of work, as well as the type of resources needed for the program; reviewing law enforcement case reports to ensure compliance with policy; leading complex incident management teams in high-visibility public arenas; advising senior managers and implementing management actions through multiple organizational layers; collaborating with other federal agencies, local governments, and/or non-governmental organizations including through mutual aid agreements; establishing and carrying out management priorities; executing executive leadership or programmatic initiatives; budgeting and financial management of a multi-million dollar program; recruiting, hiring, motivating, and evaluating staff; and representing the National Park Service in public meetings on controversial issues. You must include hours per week worked.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Requirements Continued:
Selectee(s) will be required to carry a firearm while performing duties and maintain firearm proficiency.
Selectee(s) must be free of any domestic violence convictions. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
Prior to appointment, you must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties; and also pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician. You will also be required to undergo periodic medical examinations throughout employment.
Prior to appointment, the people selected for these positions must be determined physically fit by an authorized physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties, pass a medical examination, and pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB). The PEB is a fitness test consisting of five different components: 1) agility run - measures the ability to get up from the ground and sprint while changing directions; 2) bench press - measures upper body strength for one repetition; 3) 1.5 mile run - measures cardio/respiratory fitness; 4) sit and reach - measures flexibility in the lower back, legs and shoulders; and 5) body composition - measures body fat. Prior to appointment, selectees will be tested in all five components, and must pass the agility run, bench press and 1.5 mile run in the 25th percentile.
Education
Law Enforcement Commission: This position requires applicants to possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to possess a valid Type I National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission (or equivalent), which requires completing training from an accredited institution, which currently consists of over 650 class hours and lasts on average 17 weeks.
