This position is located in the Engineering Department of the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, in Phoenix, Arizona. The primary function of the department is to plan, coordinate, and direct maintenance at the hospital; assist in operation of the boiler plant, and maintain/repair, renovate buildings, equipment, and grounds. Incumbent reports to the Maintenance Supervisor.
Duties

Performs minor carpentry work, such as modifying existing structures by deleting or adding new walls, and constructs simple wood structures for use in hospital patient care or other occupancies.
Performs minor plumbing work such as repairing existing plumbing fixtures, lines, and joints. Builds new lines for gas, steam, water and sewage; maintains the sprinkler system.
Repairs basic problems on split system heating, and air conditioning units.
Assist in maintaining the hospital grounds by performing such duties as weeding, thinning, pruning, and trimming greenery for good appearance and assist in upkeep of hospital landscaping by using various landscaping materials, such as rocks, aggregate, timber, plants trees, scrubs, top soil and chemicals.
Performs daily and monthly preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT(S): A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Worker. Evidence of experience which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by your resume.

WG-4749-07: Follows oral or written instructions and/or work orders; performing maintenance mechanic duties, including use and apply standard building techniques, practices, and codes, read and understand blueprints, sketches and schematics, read and understand work orders in order to complete assigned work, use and maintain pneumatic hand tools, use and maintain shop tools, drill press, band saw, table saw, etc., follow manufacturer's instructions for use of power tools, follow safety manuals on operation of tools and equipment, follow safety guidelines working with oils and lubricants, working with inert gases and solvents, acids, adhesives, sealants, paints, oils and lubricants while performing maintenance tasks.
Physical Effort: The employee works from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, and hard to reach places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment.
Working Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside and is usually dusty, dirty, and greasy. The employee is required to work outside in bad weathers. The employee is exposed to broken bones, scrapes, burns, cuts, and infections while working. Incumbent will be subject to work in confined spaces.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
