This position is located at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, Hines, IL (578) - a Level 1a Complexity VHA Facility.
Duties
The Fire Protection Inspector serves as the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator And is responsible for the formation preparation coordination in maintenance of mission essential emergency plans.The plans cover the provisions of continuous patient care and treatment during emergencies affecting the hospital and or vision 12 operations. The inspector serves as the primary resource to the hospital director for emergency preparedness and management this role requires the following;Serves as expert advisor to all levels of management involved in disaster training or operations, preparation in the in NDMS VA/ DoD contingency program.
Assist in the operational maintenance of the VA weapons of mass destruction internal response cache.
Provides technical guidance for the physical operation status of the hospital's decontamination unit to include training personnel annual exercises purchasing and upkeep of DECON operations PPE
Conducts regularly scheduled and unscheduled emergency decontamination weapons of mass destruction and natural disaster drills
Conducts regularly scheduled and unscheduled inspections of all safety and fire equipment such as fire extinguishers automatic sprinklers fire alarms fire doors exit stairways indicator post standpipe systems self contained breathing mask as well as special inspections to ensure equipment is operable at all times
During fire inspections the inspectors test install fire extinguisher protection detection and prevention systems to determine service ability and reports conditions to supervisors to assure corrective measures are expedited
Conducts regularly scheduled and unscheduled inspections of buildings water distribution systems and Fire Protection systems
Issues burn permits to staff in contractors and compliance with appropriate policies and procedures

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/06/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade 1) Utilizing fire safety and occupational health concepts, principles, practices, laws and regulations to perform administrative actions to support a fire safety program; 2) Providing mentoring and guidance of fire protection and prevention to help others gain knowledge and skills; 3) Evaluating statutes, laws, regulations, licensing, and permitting requirements governing fire protection and prevention to provide fire protection assistance to others; and 4) Providing technical advice of fire protection and prevention programs to assist in training services for firefighting.

Physical Requirements: The work involves the frequent performance of surveys and onsite visits to laboratory and maintenance shops necessitating prolonged periods of walking and standing.
