Works under the general supervision of the Utility Management Unit Foreman. The incumbent is assigned a wide variety of duties of a journeyman electrician involving installation, modification, repair, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and testing of complex electrical systems, circuits, equipment, appliances, controls, components, lighting fixtures and fire alarm systems.
Duties
Major duties will include, but are not limited to:
Be familiar with the provisions of the National Electrical Code and sufficiently knowledgeable of the entire code to satisfactorily research special requirements or applications.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics and operation and maintenance manuals.
Be knowledgeable in the use of electrical test instruments in order to trace and locate the cause of equipment and control device malfunctions and then complete repairs or adjustments.
Skilled in cutting, threading, bending and installation of rigid pipe and other conduit systems and a variety of other raceway systems.
Be able to pull conductors through raceway systems, phase out and make connections, sometimes under load (when they are "hot").Under emergency conditions, may be required to splice high voltage (12.5KV) cables. Maintains and repairs all electrical equipment including transformers, feeders, motors, generators, starters, overload and over current protectors and controllers.
Troubleshoot and maintain electric and electronic control circuits on various equipment including laundry equipment, dietetic equipment, rotary files, electric beds, fire alarm system, tray conveyors, and incinerators.
Ability to select proper wire gauges, insulation, protective devices and switching for a variety of equipment, lighting and miscellaneous electrical loads.
Balance service loads over three phases
Must have journeyman skill in the use of all common electrical hand and power tools and testing equipment as required.
Be able to operate power hydraulic work platforms
Work Schedule: 7:30am -4:00pm Monday - Friday

Physical Requirements: Repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. This requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The work requires frequently lifting and carrying of tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 20 pounds and, less often, up to 40 pounds.
DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.201) for this occupation.

Preferred: Journeyman or master electrician certification/License
