This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for DIB & MRTFB to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. Duties

Lead a crew of firefighters assigned to a major piece of motorized firefighting equipment such as a pumper or aerial ladder truck in firefighting and rescue operations. Distribute and balance workload among firefighting personnel; check work in progress; and resolve simple/informal complaints. Prepare reports, maintain/update daily rosters, and track time attendance. Approve leave on a limited, case by case basis. Assist supervisor in administration, training, and operation functions in the department. Respond to accidents and other emergencies both on and off the installation involving injury and illnesses, sometimes encountering situations which may be life threatening. Make an independent preliminary assessment of the patient's condition and, from a variety of prescribed protocols, select the one considered the most appropriate under the given circumstances; provide treatment as prescribed in the protocol selected. As a certified hazardous materials responder, direct and participate in hazardous material spill response training and actual spill/incident responses and containment.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent must wear a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • This position requires the incumbent to report for duty during Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief. Incumbent must maintain a functioning telephone at residence to aid in contact during recall situations.
  • An appropriate, valid state and government driver's license is required as well as Emergency Vehicle Operators certification to operate all vehicles assigned to the Fire Protection and Prevention division.
  • This position requires an uncommon tour of duty; a 72-hour work week, to include working nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Incumbent must participate in the Fire Division's Fitness and Wellness Program that includes a cardiovascular physical fitness program IAW NFPA 1583 and DODI 6055.06.
  • Within the first year of occupying the GS-0081-08 position, incumbent must obtain and maintain the Driver Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, and Airport Firefighter.
  • Within the first year of occupying the GS-0081-08 position, incumbent must obtain and maintain the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Wildland Firefighter Type II Red Card Certification.
  • This position requires the incumbent pass an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete an annual emergency vehicle operator’s course.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). Certifications required to qualify at the GS-08 level: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, HAZMAT Technician, Emergency Medical Technician, Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I
