This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for DIB & MRTFB to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. Duties

Responds to fire alarms for all classes of fires. Operates a 200-gpm to a 1,250-gpm pumper or other emergency vehicle. Determines pressure required and adjusts valves, as necessary, to regulate flow of extinguishing agents. Inspects and tests breathing equipment before and after each use and refills air cylinders. Rescues people in danger and removes people from buildings and other structures for first-aid treatment. Uses a variety of hand and power tools and works in all phases of firefighting/rescue operations. Inspects buildings for hazardous conditions and compliance to fire-code standards. Responds to wild land fires using wild land firefighting equipment to control the spread of fires and to protect property.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment physical examination and annual examination thereafter t ensure the continued required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50lbs.
  • This position requires the incumbent pass an annual job performance test.
  • This position will require the incumbent to participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has a temporary Duty (TDY) of business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform and safety apparel accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • A valid state and government driver's license is required as well as Emergency Vehicle Operators certification to operate all vehicles assigned to the Fire Protection and Prevention division.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete an annual emergency vehicle operator's course.
  • Within the first year of occupying the GS-08 position, prior to promotion to GS-09 incumbent must obtain and then continue to maintain the following DoD Firefighter Certification levels: - Continued Below-
  • Firefighter I and II, Hazardous Materials Technician, and Driver Operator-Pumper
  • Within the first year of occupying the GS-09 position, incumbent must obtain and then continue to maintain the following DoD Firefighter Certification levels: Driver Operator-Aerial, Driver Operator-Mobile Water Supply -Continued below-
  • Driver Operator-Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, Airport Firefighter, Dod Wildland Firefighter I and II, National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Wildland Firefighter Type II Red Card Certification.
  • This position requires an uncommon tour of duty; a 72-hour work week, which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working night, weekends, and holidays.
  • Incumbent must maintain a functioning telephone at residence to aid in contact during recall situations.
  • One-year trial/probationary period may be required.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-08 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing rescue operations; detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; controlling hazardous materials incidents; executing established emergency medical techniques, methods, and/or equipment to stabilize patients for transport. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). To occupy the GS-08 position prior to appointment the selectee must possess and maintain the following DoD Firefighter certification levels: Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic NOTE: All Firefighter certifications must be through the DoD Fire and Emergency Certification System, International Fire Services Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board). GS-09 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling and extinguishing fires; assisting with rescue operations, operating emergency vehicles and equipment and assessing patient's conditions to administer basic treatment; and providing basic life support. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). To occupy the GS-09 position prior to appointment the selectee must possess and maintain the following DoD Firefighter certification levels: Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Driver Operator-Pumper Firefighter I and II HAZMAT Technician NOTE: All Firefighter certifications must be through the DoD Fire and Emergency Certification System, International Fire Services Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board).
