This position is located in the Department of Justice (DOJ), Justice Management Division (JMD), Facilities and Administrative Services Staff (FASS), Justice Building Services (JBS), Construction Services (CS), in Washington, D.C. The Justice Building Services is responsible for performing functions with respect to the operations, maintenance, repair, preservation, alteration, furnishing, equipment and custody of the Robert F. Kennedy, Main Justice Building (RFK).

Duties

The duties and responsibilities of a Wood Crafter generally include, but are not limited to, the following: Fabricates and repairs wooden items such as, cabinetry, furniture, and decorative woodwork which are located throughout RFK. Constructs and repairs a wide variety of structural items such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, baseboards, molding, floors, transoms, and panels. Plans and lays out work from specifications, blueprints, sketches, and oral instructions. Selects, cuts, turns, shapes, joins, bonds, fits, assembles, and decorates wooden materials and parts, using the full range of hand and power woodworking tools, machines, and techniques. Uses a wide range of woodworking machining techniques in order to set up, adapt, and use appropriate machines, tools, and accessories to accomplish projects.

Requirements

  • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • You will be required to complete a pre-employment security investigation and background check which includes a drug screening.
  • You may be required to complete a one-year probationary or trial period.
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born on, or after, December 31st 1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of Wood Crafter, (WG-4605-10), you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below AND possess the required specialized experience specific to the series and grade you are applying to. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): I have the ability to perform common Wood Crafter tasks. I am skilled in using a variety of tool attachments such as rotary vises, dividing heads, vertical milling heads, tapping attachments, or rotary tables, as well as working from blueprints, sketches, work orders, models of items to be made, or other specifications. I am also skilled in determining which material would best be used for the specified design, which tools are to be used to complete the assignment, and making recommendations on a variety of items, such as equipment, tools, and materials needed to maintain specified tolerances and fits. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Physical Requirements: Works in tiring positions for prolonged periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, stooping, crouching, and arm movement. The incumbent sometimes does the work in cramped areas, on temporary platforms, and overheads. The incumbent frequently lifts and carry items weighing up to 20 kilograms (45) pounds. The incumbent occasionally lifts heavier items with assistance. Working Conditions: The incumbent is exposed to woodworking machine shop areas or other enclosed areas which are sometimes unheated and, indoors or outdoors. Exposed frequently to eye, skin, nose, and lung irritations from glue, bonding chemicals, vapors, splinters, and sawdust. Frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts and serious injuries, such as loss of fingers, from accidents while operating wood working machines. Some of the protective devices the incumbent uses may be uncomfortable and worn for long periods. You MUST meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/28/2023.
