This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services, Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, headquartered in Washington, District of Columbia. This position is an exciting opportunity to contribute to implementing historic health care legislation. The Inflation Reduction Act includes several provisions related to lowering the cost of prescription drugs and improving access to care for millions.

Duties

As a Public Affairs Specialist focused on earned media, you will: Create and sustain relationships with national, regional, and local media outlets, reporters, and other media stakeholders to drive amplification of major healthcare rollouts. Plan, develop, and execute an earned media strategy to raise awareness and increase public education of the prescription drug law among Medicare beneficiaries and other key audiences. Draft statements, pitches, press releases, and prepare spokespeople for interviews and briefings. Collaborate with the larger team to ensure a strong press strategy is incorporated into all communications activities, including coordinating with internal (e.g., HHS Operational and Staff Divisions such as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, etc.) and external (e.g., White House, Office of Management and Budget, and nongovernmental organizations, etc.) stakeholders to achieve national, regional, and local communications goals. These are full-time TERM positions. Appointment to these positions will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed twelve months, with possible extensions up to a total of four years without further competition (based on agency needs).

Qualifications

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service performing ALL of the following: Experience pitching to a wide variety of media outlets, and building and maintaining successful media relationships. Knowledge of the current media landscape, including health care and health access. Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Ability to work both independently and within a large and complex team environment with a positive attitude and proactive approach to the work.
