The Maintenance Mechanic is assigned to the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor (East Campus) and the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor (West Campus) Engineering Service, Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS). The primary function of this position is to provide a quick response to simple maintenance and repairs to locksmith, painting and carpentry.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Applies broad knowledge of all characteristics and capabilities of all locking devices and their interrelationships with other related items making up a complete security system. Uses cutting machines, code type and duplicator type and impressions extra keys for locks. Develops complete key systems as required, selecting cores, keys and coding each as required. Maintains close liaison with security personnel concerning forced entries, installations and coordinates with manufacturer representatives concerning correct new methods of forceful entry of safes and vaults and of neutralizing combination locks. Performs the full range of carpentry and carpentry related functions to maintain, remodel, alter, and construct wood and wood substitute articles for the depot buildings and structures such as, office buildings, warehouses, etc. Cuts turns, shapes, joins, bonds, fits, assembles and finishes wooden parts and articles having precise, complex, and detailed features such as curved and contoured surfaces, matches panels, and complex joints. Fabricates frames and castings for structural and trim items such as windows, doors, ventilators, plywood dust work, and cabinets. Accomplishes coating work on various types of materials and surfaces, by accepted methods of the trade, such as brushing, rolling, spraying, to ensure surfaces have a smooth textured and decorative appearance, and meet specified requirements set forth by the manufacture. Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending and mixing in various additives. Independently plans the materials, tools, and techniques needed to complete the required work. Performs other related duties as assigned. Ability to read and interpret the full range of documents such as plans, blueprints, specifications, etc., in order to plan, layout and execute assignments. Incumbent performs work from ladders, scaffolding and platforms. Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment. Lifts and carries heavy pieces if lumber or equipment normally not more than 50 pounds.
