This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Arlington National Cemetery is located in Arlington, VA. Since May of 1864, Arlington National Cemetery has served as the nation's premier military cemetery and shrine honoring those men and women who served in the Armed Forces.

Duties

Provide major level repair, overhaul, and/or modification of systems such as diesel, gasoline, and other types of internal-combustion engines. Diagnose causes of mechanical operating problems and trouble shoot repairs often having to improvise or develop methods when standard procedures for repairs are not possible while working on various types of heavy mobile equipment. Manufacture or fabricate in house solutions to mechanical problems and issues thereby decreasing costs and downtime. Performs mechanical maintenance, overhaul, and repair of a variety of gasoline-and diesel-powered heavy construction equipment such as cranes, wheel-and crawler-type tractors, drilling machines, compressors, and stationary engines. Complete both minor and major repairs in accordance with approved work orders, diagnosing trouble to the extent necessary to satisfactorily complete repairs. Perform complex troubleshooting and repair on modern Caterpillar, Cummins, and Detroit engines incorporating complex electronic fuel system management devices and state of the art functional electronics.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a Class A CDL license with (P) endorsement.
  • Must possess and retain a valid state driver's license and must pass testing for and retain a government driver's license.
  • In accordance with Change 3 to AR 600-85, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program, employee must successfully pass a urinalysis screening for illegal drug use prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • Employees required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential".
  • In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC ~ without more than normal supervision. Identifying mechanical operating problems on heavy mobile equipment; repairing and overhauling many types of heavy mobile equipment with complex state-of-the-art electrical and electronic systems; and operating on equipment with complex interconnected systems. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: The employee works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. The employee frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds or puts forth similar strenuous effort while standing, lying, or sitting. The employee often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of others or lifting devices. Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside. Inside work is in a well-lighted, heated, and vented garage building. Outside work may be performed adjacent to the garage building or in the field. Field assignments involve exposure to temperature extremes common to the normal construction season, and to generally unfavorable working conditions in as much as most heavy equipment repair in the field. The nature of the work is dirty, greasy, and noisy. The use of hand tools in cramped areas and while in awkward body positions (bending, prone, or reaching) subjects the worker to possible cuts and bruises to hands and arms.
