This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Arlington National Cemetery is located in Arlington, VA. Since May of 1864, Arlington National Cemetery has served as the nation's premier military cemetery and shrine honoring those men and women who served in the Armed Forces.

Duties

Determine causes of mechanical operating problems, trace and locate defects, and make repairs to heavy mobile equipment and vehicles. Perform complex troubleshooting and repair on modern Caterpillar, Cummins, and Detroit engines incorporating complex electronic fuel system management devices and state of the art functional electronics. Perform mechanical maintenance, overhaul, and repair of a variety of gasoline-and diesel-powered heavy construction equipment such as cranes, wheel-and crawler-type tractors, drilling machines, compressors, and stationary engines. Manufacture or fabricate in house solutions to mechanical problems and issues thereby decreasing costs and downtime. Complete both minor and major repairs in accordance with approved work orders, diagnosing trouble to the extent necessary to satisfactorily complete repairs. Use technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics and similar guides to make repairs and modifications.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to sign DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license and must pass testing for and retain a government driver's license.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Heavy lifting up to 50 pounds may be required.
  • May be required to transport others in and around the cemetery.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC ~ without more than normal supervision. - identifying mechanical operating problems on heavy earth moving mobile equipment; repairing and overhauling many types of heavy mobile equipment with complex state-of-the-art electrical and electronic systems; and utilizing electronic diagnostic equipment to identify mechanical issues. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing and crouching. Does strenuous work while standing, lying or sitting. Frequently lifts, carries, pushes, pulls, turns and positions parts, assemblies, equipment or tools weighing up to 40 or 50 pounds. Lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside in a well-lighted and heated area. Continually exposed to irritation from work on concrete floors, fumes, and noise. Typically works on parts and systems, which are dirty, oily or greasy. Subject to cuts, burns, bruises, shocks and sprains while repairing, positioning and moving equipment. Often exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acid, fluids and lubricants
