This position is located in the Facilities Maintenance Service within the Portland VA Health Care System located in Vancouver, Washington.
The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of architectural, mechanical, and electrical components of buildings requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices.
Duties
This is a term appointment not to exceed 18 months. Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration of more than 1 year, but not more than 4 years and are subject to a 1 year trial period. Should the need warrant, term appointments may be extended without further competition up to a maximum of the 4 year limitation. The appointment to a term position does not confer eligibility for promotion, reassignment, or transfer to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, the ability to perform the duties of the Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Related experience includes: performing duties by applying knowledge of wood and wood substitute materials and construction techniques; operating general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment (e.g., routers, band and scroll saws, drill presses, portable drills, clippers, joiners, shavers, tenoners, sanders, power activated nailers, various saws, etc.); interpreting complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes; preparing surfaces and using appropriate coating techniques in performing painting duties; applying coating materials by any of the accepted techniques including those used for getting special effects; and arranging layout of signs and painting signs on a various materials based on customer's request. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position AND the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
