About the Position: Position may be filled as a temporary promotion or detail NTE 2 years by a current permanent Army employee. Temporary promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Position may be made permanent without further competition. Employees are not eligible for a detail in the OCONUS area unless already residing in the same overseas area (foreign or non-foreign) as the position being filled.

Duties

As Safety Director supervises subordinate brigades' safety personnel, develops and oversees a 24-hour per day Safety and Occupational Health program dedicated to accident prevention, safety awareness, training and investigation activities. Ensures compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations (OSHA) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) licenses. Advises the command group, subordinate commanders, activity directors and other key staff members of appropriate safety measures and alternative courses of action to achieve critical mission goals with a minimum risk to people and property. Develops and conducts a comprehensive safety education program which involves the constant development of safety education and safety awareness programs. Plans and directs the work to be accomplished by subordinates. Responsible for the training and oversight of military and civilian safety professionals to ensure that safety officers are integrated into training and real world environments.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is Designated Emergency Essential. This position is considered essential to support Army's mobilization and wartime mission during periods of increasing tension or mobilization.
  • This position is Mission Essential. Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations as directed by the Commander.
  • Must obtain and maintain an Explosives Safety Professional Certificate - Level 2 within 1 year of being assigned to this position.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
  • The military ACU is the duty uniform (when deployed, or in field environments). Incumbent will be issued standard TA-50 for use per local requirements.
  • Incumbent must possess a valid state driver's license and be able to obtain and maintain a government motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain standard Army Safety Program certification. Continuous education and training in a tactical field environment is required.
  • Work involved frequent visits and temporary duty at field sites as well as deployment and participation in military exercises in a variety of environments. This mandates walking, standing, stooping, bending, carrying and similar movements.
  • During deployment, physical demands may be greatly increased and require extended waling with rucksack weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program. Must successfully complete a pre-appointment drug test prior to being placed into this position.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience managing a safety and occupational health program. Developing and recommending safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management. Applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Administration and ManagementManaging Human ResourcesOral Communication Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).
