The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, consisting of 21 museums and galleries, the National Zoological Park, nine research facilities and the Smithsonian Libraries. The Smithsonian American Art Museum is the nation’s first collection of American art and is home to one of the largest and most inclusive collections of American art in the world.

Duties

The Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for building relationships and trust with local communities in the Washington metropolitan area and engaging audiences that more accurately reflect and honor the make-up of the greater Washington regions and will work closely with the Head of Interpretation and Audience Research as well as Interpretation staff, Education staff, Curatorial staff, External Affairs and Public Programs staff to launch the Museum’s first dedicated community outreach and engagement initiative.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as working directly with people of diverse abilities or people from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic, and socioeconomic backgrounds; developing and facilitating convenings or collaborative programs with community groups; assessing outcomes of community engagement activities; working collaboratively and creatively on internal teams and across departments in a collegial and respectful manner; and communicating orally and in writing statements of work, grants, letters, memoranda, or reports.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Or Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related.Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications.
