This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: This position is located in the Directorate of Public Works, on Joint Base Lewis-McChord Washington.
Duties
Assist higher graded employees with maintenance duties on equipment such as plumbing; heating ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); and fire extinguishing systems.
Perform tasks on fire extinguishing systems, such as installing, maintaining and repairing valves, switches, and air compressors.
Operate and maintain trucks capable of carrying loads weighing up to one ton.
Remove asbestos containing materials such as pipe and tank insulation, in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Perform plumbing tasks such as assisting in the removal, assembly, laying or hanging of pipes.
Perform routine maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC/R) equipment and air compressors, such as changing filters, clean strainers, drive belt replacement, greasing bearings, oil changes, cleaning coils.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic Helper without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common maintenance repairs. I have assisted a journey worker in preparing work area by getting tools and supplies, carrying materials, and lifting and holding material in place during installation. I have operated simple hand and power tools, cleared work area of debris and kept tools clean and lubricated. I have operated motor vehicles. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Efforts: Helper assists in making repairs that may require making installations from ladders, platforms, and scaffolding where parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires him to stoop, stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring uncomfortable positions. Frequently handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier. Frequently works in confined areas.
Working Conditions: Works indoors and outdoors for where they are subject to prevailing weather conditions. Incumbent is subject to high temperatures, constant noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil and fumes in the work area. May be subject to cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from acids, caustics, hot water, and steam. In addition, may walk on catwalks and ladders. Subject to electrical shocks and burns, cuts and abrasions, abnormal heat and cold, fumes, burns from hot water and steam lines, disagreeable odors and danger of infection.
