Duties
Examines claims for copyright in all categories of works applicable in the particular Division assigned, including multiple inter-related problems. Registers, questions, or refuses claims with initial supervisory review with the expectation of progressing toward independence. Utilizing specific guidelines established by the Registration Program and the particular Division assigned, examines registration materials to determine the correct facts of the claim, checks the accuracy of the application statements against information included in the physical or electronic work deposited, and appropriately questions discrepancies. Determines whether the deposits contain sufficient original creative authorship, whether all applicable eligibility requirements have been met, and whether additional copyright principles are applicable to the claim. Analyzes, identifies, and resolves routine issues with initial supervision with the expectation of progressing toward independence. Evaluates correspondence relating to claims and addresses or resolves relevant issues.Uses appropriate analysis to identify problems in routine and increasingly complex claims. Drafts routine email correspondence that efficiently and accurately explains common problems, including the explanation of any relevant copyright principles. Writes in a clear and well-organized structure tailored to the recipient. Probes relevant questions to gather necessary information in a clear and efficient manner. Conveys copyright principles to a widely diverse audience, ranging from persons with no knowledge of copyright to copyright attorneys and industry professionals. Applies knowledge of copyright principles to all communication efforts and work activities. Performs research on copyright issues involving the Copyright Act, U.S. Copyright Office regulations, the Compendium of U.S. Copyright Office Practices, Third Edition, and other Office resources.Maintains a complex and dynamic workload and efficiently examines claims in copyright utilizing the electronic registration system software. Manages and organizes workload and tasks in an effective and timely manner. Proficiently uses standard software applications, such as Microsoft Office applications, to create email, letters, and other documents. Adapts on a continuing basis to regular changes and updates to the electronic registrations system as well as to changes in applicable law, regulations and/or registration practices. Continually engages in learning activities to keep up-to-date on legal and technical practices.
