The position is established to provide support in a wide variety of basic clinical and intermediate level administrative functions. The individual must ensure compliance with VA regulations, Joint Commission standards, and other regulatory agencies. It is anticipated they will require minimal guidance to acquire the necessary skills in the specific tasks, tests, and procedures to meet patient care and program needs specific to the assignment in the surgical specialty clinics.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to : Coordinates with team members to assure patients in the clinics are seen and treated in a timely manner. Assures patients are comfortable and treated courteously. Serves a critical role as the communication coordinator. Assures that all visitors and telephone calls are referred in a prompt and courteous manner. Ascertains the nature of the visit/call and determines the appropriate action to resolve. Personally handle requests for information, or when the situation cannot be resolved, refers the issue to the appropriate individual. Relays messages to the various team members. Determines technical factors, sets controls, and operates equipment and instruments. Adjusts and adapts specialized equipment for difficult procedures. Selects and sets equipment's technical factors for a variety of difficult tests or procedures. Sets up and adjusts accessory equipment required and sets indicators for measurements or readings necessary for requested procedures. Locates and sets up equipment and alt accessories and understands proper positioning. Adjusts equipment placement for patient's comfort. Schedules procedures and coordinates with other services. rders and maintains supplies for the unit, orders and maintains specialized supplies pertaining to instruments used in the unit, operates and monitors EKG equipment for both 12 and 15 leads Assist medical staff with or performs diagnostic procedures used to diagnose medical conditions. Adjusts, adapts, and operates specialized equipment and accessories needed for difficult procedures. Performs difficult specialized tests and measurements that are preliminary to the physician's treatment of the patient.' Performs a range of diagnostic support duties such as taking, recording, and reporting to supervisor any deviations in vital signs, taking specimens, labeling specimens for the laboratory. Arranges and passes medical instruments and materials to medical/health professional for a variety of diagnostic tests and procedures. Makes gross visual observations and identifies subtle changes regarding the patient's condition. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/20/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. Individual Occupational Requirement: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, you are required to have technician experience, which is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Have a thorough knowledge of various VA directives and Medical Center Policies pertinent to patient care as well as specific regulatory bodies such as JCAHO/ EMTALA, and knowledge of complex criteria for eligibility for interpretation and resolution of areas such as prosthetics, dental, outside referrals, and any special procedure or test that may be necessary. Experience coordinating consultations and referrals to specialty services and arranging for future appointments, familiar with monitoring equipment. Able to recognize abnormal readings and report to the appropriate personnel immediately. Must have knowledge of standard medical terminology and abbreviations used by providers. Physical Requirements: The variety of duties reflects a variety of potential extended periods of sitting/ walking, standing, carrying items, typing, writing, as well as lifting heavy, sometimes immobile patients. The incumbent is expected to utilize good body mechanics and have stamina to withstand a stressful environment.
