The position is at the full performance level located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, in the Engineering Service, In House Construction Team, Projects Section. The primary purpose of the position is to serve the Veteran under the supervision of the Supervisor, In-House Construction Team. This includes the functions of the In-House Construction Team at the VA San Diego Healthcare System.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Performs at journeymen level a variety of trades including various: HVAC, steel stud framing, drywall installation and finishing, carpentry, electrical, dust and asbestos control measures. Tasks will require constructing, altering, repairing, and modifying a variety of HV AC systems, piping systems, items made of metal, wood, plastics, composites, masonry and fabrics, where accuracy and space are essential and structural soundness and appearance is crucial. Surveys job sites and be responsible in determining schedule, materials needed, and the infectious control requirements prior to the start of the task/job and maintain these requirements from start to finish. Performs journeyman responsibilities in the electrician trades. Determines the most efficient methods and techniques, devices, and materials necessary to accomplish the job. Plans and lays out the routing, placement, materials needed necessary to feed new equipment and machinery installation, modification, and or repairs. Troubleshoots and diagnose faulty equipment's and machinery power and control issues using electrical and electronic test equipment's. Reads and understands schematic and wiring diagrams related to the operation of equipment and machinery. Identify and be able to isolate power to equipment and machinery in the event of a casualty to prevent damage to equipment and machinery, injury to personnel and containment of casualty. Installs or modifies distribution control panels, conduit, outlet boxes, electrical fixtures, switches, light fixtures, relays, switch gear, and electrical warning, detection and fire alarm systems. Studies blueprints, wiring diagrams, and maintenance and repair manuals to determine the proper routing, placement, gauge, balance, load, and safe operation or circuits, systems, equipment and controls. Installs, modifies, and repairs a variety of critical hospital equipment and systems that achieve required climatic conditions. Installs refrigeration and air conditioning systems by positioning compressors, motors, condensers, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, evaporators, heaters, and other components in accordance with design specifications. Installs and connects auxiliary control mechanisms and piping or tubing. Troubleshoots, maintains pneumatic/electronic controls that are related to the heating or cooling system. Performs the full range of journey level duties associated with a variety of woodcrafters, carpentry, asbestos containment, masonry, painting, where fit, accuracy and space are essential and structural soundness and appearance is essential. Tasks will require constructing, altering, repairing, and modifying items made of metal, wood, and wood substitutes. Builds fixtures, shelving, cabinets, interior walls, laths, sheathing, floors, ceiling, and stairs with verbal and/or drawings. Installs window frames, doors, outside trims, inside trims. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 5:00am-1:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD13074A Physical Requirements: May handle or carry weights up to 90 pounds, and occasionally more. Assistance is usually available for handling of heavier material and equipment. Heavy exertion is required at frequent intervals. Work requires pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, walking, climbing, stooping, ability for normal mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, normal hearing and vision. Must have physical capabilities for working inside and outside in excessive heat and cold, noise, confined areas, inclement weather and on intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces that can be found at or in transit to or from work sites. May receive minor cuts and abrasions while performing these duties. Must be able to work from ladders and platforms, and work in awkward and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent may be assigned to work in areas/confined spaces where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. These agents may include, but are not limited to fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing, and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc. To ensure employee safety and health, personnel protection programs are maintained consistent with applicable laws and regulations. Incumbent will be required to wear respirators and must be physically able to perform assigned work tasks as directed above and operate safety equipment. Pulmonary function test, chest x?ray, completion of personal history questionnaire, and a physical evaluation conducted by a physician is required prior to start and then annually. Typical safety equipment required by the trade is safety shoes, safety glasses, respirators, protective clothing and hard hats. Incumbent will work a regular tour of duty, may work overtime, nights or weekends. Incumbent will be exposed to asbestos containing areas. Incumbent must follow V ASDHS Medical Center Memorandum 00-52, Airborne Asbestos Protection.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
