Employee will be assigned to the Laundry Section, West Haven VA Medical Center. The Laundry Worker is under the general supervision of the laundry superintendent and receives direct supervision from the unit supervisor.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include:
Preparing and loading carts of clean linen for delivery to wards, clinics, and other areas; loading carts according to established linen quotas.
Handling telephone requests for additional linen and maintaining records of all such requests.
Performing all duties in accordance with station policies, procedures, regulations, and standards applicable to the laundry section.
Operating the flatwork spreader/feeder, ironer, folder, and stacker/conveyor; operating industrial dryers, a small piece folder, and garment tunnel finisher.
Unloading industrial washers and operating lift stations, index switches, and rail sling systems.
Sorting soiled linen by classification and degree of soil and following all established procedures.
Performing routine care and maintenance of machines and equipment (i.e., tightening nuts and bolts and/or greasing/oiling fittings and wheels); inspecting linens for damage, stained items, etc.
Maintaining production counts and inventory records of all supplies.
Following established safety and infection control procedures; keeping the assigned work area clean and free of debris.
Performing other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:00am-2:30pm

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Employee must use proper body mechanics and coordination; must possess the strength and stamina for doing heavy physical tasks for long periods of time; and must be able to handle loaded carts weighing up to 700 pounds and lift loads over 50 pounds. Employee uses provided safety garments during the performance of all assigned duties.
Laundries are extremely noisy and usually hot and humid. Workers are exposed to noise, vibrations, and atmospheric conditions associated with a textile care setting. Requires continuous walking on concrete floors, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting. In the possibility of exposure to laundry from patients with contagious diseases, workers wear protective masks, gloves, and gowns.
