This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, Director of Operational Logistics, DOL-3, Facilities Engineering Division, Fire Protection Branch, Kodiak, AK. There is a 3.53% (of basic pay) Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) authorized for this position location. Duties

In this position as a Firefighter (Basic Life Support), you will perform firefighting and emergency medical services, and will work shifts and day work schedules to meet mission and staffing requirements.  You will also be subject to recall from an off-duty status.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Alaska State vehicle operator's license.
  • Must obtain & maintain Alaska St Emergency Med Technician certification.
  • You will be required to undergo pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Pre-Employment Physical Required
  • Max 37 years of age entry restriction (see Questions for more information).
  • This position requires a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI).

Qualifications

GS-04: Applicants must have completed at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-3 level (in the Federal service), or 2 years above high school in related course work. Examples of specialized experience include: assisting in controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department; assisting in rescue operations; operating fire communication equipment; assisting in controlling hazardous materials incidents. GS-05: Applicants must have completed at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level (in the Federal service), or a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelors degree in related course work, or a combination of specialized experience and education.  Examples of specialized experience include: controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized fire department; performing rescue operations; rescue operations; responding to and operating apparatus on fires and/or emergencies. GS-06: Applicants must have completed at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level (in the Federal service). Examples of specialized experience include controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized fire department; rescue operations; responding to and operating apparatus on fires and/or emergencies in the following situations: Commercial and Residential Structures, ARFF, Shipboard, HazMat Incidents, Wild-land Firefighting, Confined Space, Technical Rescue,  BLS Medical. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.  If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office. In addition to the requirements above, possession of the following licensing and certifications are highly desired upon application.  Certain certifications/licensing must be obtained and/or maintained within 1 year. At the GS-4 level: - Current driver's license At the GS-5 level, all requirements of GS-04 plus the following:- Firefighter I/II -Hazmat Operations -CPR/AED At the GS-6 level, all requirements of GS-05 plus the following: -Airport Firefighter -EMT- Basic Life Support (Alaska EMT-1 or National EMT-Basic, or State Reciprocal Equivalence)  Recruitment Incentive:  Selectee(s) for this position who are newly appointed to a permanent position are authorized to receive a one-time recruitment incentive of 25% of the salary, including locality for this position. Receipt of the bonus will require a 12 month service agreement. Relocation Incentive:  Selectee(s) for this position who are current federal employees on permanent appointments and will be moving outside of the current commuting area of their current position to accept this position are authorized to receive a one-time relocation incentive of 25% of the salary including locality for this position. Receipt of the bonus will require a 12 month service agreement. The employee must establish a residence in the new geographic area prior to payment. Student Loan Incentive:  Selectee(s) for this position who are newly appointed to a permanent or term position may be eligible for student loan repayment up to $10,000 (pre-tax) for one calendar year. More than one loan may be repaid if the combined repayments do not exceed $10,000. Receipt of this incentive will require a three year service agreement.
