This position is organizationally aligned under Social Work Service at the VA Illiana Health Care System Medical Center, Danville, IL (550). The overall purpose of this position is to enable Veterans, families and caregivers to function at their fullest potential and to enhance their quality of life through the development of personal, familial, social, medical, and economic resources and to facilitate linkage between Veterans, families, and caregivers with VA and community resources.
Duties
Develop psychosocial assessments of Veterans to identify social, emotional, physical, familial, economic, and vocational/avocational strengths, needs and resources.
Identify appropriate community and VA resources and facilitate linkage with and utilization of these resources by Veterans, families, and caregivers and provide follow-up to ensure that resources / services were received.
Assist Veterans, families, and caregivers by providing education and/or appropriate referrals related to issues that are tangible and overt in nature, including but not limited to; inability to meet basic financial needs, housing insecurity, transportation insecurity, questions related to charges for VA and community provided medical services, and completing applications for various VA and community resources.
Assist Veterans, families, and caregivers by making appropriate referrals related to issues that are intangible in nature, including but not limited to; relationship conflict, behavioral health, mental illness, substance use, and concerns related to aging such as adjustment to changes in physical and cognitive functioning.
Assist Veterans, families, and caregivers by providing education related to VA benefits and services, including referrals to Veteran Service Officers or Veterans Centers for support beyond the scope of Social Work Services.
Assist Veterans, families, and caregivers by assisting with navigating VHA health care services. Represent Social Work Service on committees / work groups which address program development and maintenance, direct service, education, or matters of an administrative nature.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/13/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-8 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-7. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
Education Requirement: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in major fields of study such as: social welfare, sociology, psychology, public administration, philosophy, education, anthropology, history, economics and/or English.(Transcripts are Required for consideration)

Qualifying Experience: Two years of experience as a social welfare worker or social work assistant in a voluntary, public, social, or health agency, which includes 1 year in a medical setting. In order for the experience to qualify, your experience must have been of a quality and scope to enable applicants to perform assignments typical of the grade level for which considered and one year must be equivalent to the GS7 grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The incumbent sits comfortably when completing clinical documentations. Other activities include standing, and minimal lifting less than 20 pounds. A significant amount of walking throughout the medical center is required for face-to-face contact with Veterans, family members, community agencies and medical center staff. The incumbent may be required to push the wheelchairs of Veterans with limited mobility when providing escort services, and the work may require special physical demands during therapeutic hold and or therapeutic containment when responding to disruptive behaviors.
