The Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) serves as an advance technician in specialty clinics.

Duties

Major Duties: Performs observation-based screening and collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel. Obtains patient health history for chief complaints, medication history, and information about health-related or high-risk conditions that may impact the patient's health status. Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations in a low-risk setting. Assists licensed personnel with crisis intervention and applying prevention and management of disruptive behavior techniques (PMDB). Assists EH licensed personnel with the delivery of care to employee patients. Recognizes life threatening situations and act to correct these emergent situations according to established national or local protocols. Initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS) and use of automatic external defibrillator (AED) once trained and certified and where appropriate. Clinical responsibilities include but are not limited to: taking vital signs, equipment and medical instrumentation set up, observations and interventions, specimen collection and preparation and assisting with patient exams and screening. Documents actions, interventions and patient response in the health record. Medication administration which may include intramuscular, oral, intranasal, subcutaneous, and intradermal. Follows national and local pharmacy and facility guidelines for disposal of medications. Conducts or assists with the training of personnel medical care techniques. Conducts or assist with stand-downs, community health programs, health-care screenings, and immunizations. Serve as members of hospital-wide committees to enhance employee/occupational health care. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, between 7:00 am - 6:00 pm; Compressed work schedules are available. Position Description Title/PD#: Intermediate Care Technician (Medical Assistant)/PD99968S Physical Requirements: The work involves extended periods of bending, standing and walking. Generally, the work requires recurring physical exertion with assisting patients. Work Environment: On a regular and recurring basis, employee is exposed to infection, exposure to communicable diseases and contagious diseases. The incumbent's assignment requires him/her to comply with special safety and health precautions by wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) according to universal precautions.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. GS-07 qualifying experience: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes: Equipment and surgical instrumentation setup and assist; obtaining patient vitals I.E. blood pressure, respiratory rates, height and weight, obtain and verify patient health history; apply a variety of medication administration methods; specimen collection and preparation, phlebotomy; assisting with patient exams and assessments I.E. wound care, ambulation, catheter insertion, skin biopsies, gynecology exams, 12-lead EKG placement; obtain patient health history and complete intake form; assists licensed personnel with crisis intervention and applying prevention and management of disruptive behavior techniques (PMDB); clinical documentation in health records; medical terminology, working knowledge of topographic anatomy. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and year ending dates AND hours worked per week. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. Applicants must have successfully completed one (1) year of graduate education or internship directly related to the position at the next lower grade level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Note: A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. OR, Qualifying Experience/Education Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Applicants must have equivalent combinations of creditable specialized experience and education as described above to meet the total experience requirements for the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Only education beyond a one-half year (e.g. 6 months; 9 semester hours) of graduate level education may be used to qualify applicants for the GS-07 level. Note: A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Preferred Experience: (1) year outpatient clinical and/or wound care experience, (6) months dermatology clinic experience. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-XX. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
