Duties
Major duties include but not limited to:
The Incumbent performs duties of an HVAC and Refrigeration Mechanic in the following areas: installs, maintains and repairs (both major and minor) all air conditioning and refrigeration equipment from 1/4-ton systems to 3000-ton systems; equipment types ? to 20 HP hermetic compressors, one to forty tons reciprocating compressor and up to 500 Ton Screw Type Compressors; also air and water-cooled condensers, dry and wet-type evaporators, all types of refrigeration equipment including ice machines, freezers, walk-in coolers, expansion valves, condenser water pumps, chilled water pump, cooling tower fans and motor; also air handling units of three pressures (high, medium, and low) ranging from 20-ton capacity to 130-ton, consisting of the following components: dampers, bearings, pulleys, electronic filters, air washers, after-filter, direct expansion coils, chilled water coils and motor with multi-belt sheave and steam grid humidifiers. Incumbent must be CFC certified (Universal) by the EPA as per the Clean Air Act of 1990.
The incumbent works in the layout and fabrication of duct and duct systems from 150 CFM to 20,615 CFM capacity; also performs preventive maintenance on diffusers, induction cabinets, mixing boxes and motorized fire dampers; also, maintains exhaust fans, fume hood fans, return air fans, and both direct and belt-driving types. Performs mandatory checks and recording of air changes in specific areas including Operating Rooms, Sterile Storage, and negative pressure isolation rooms.
The Incumbent performs mechanic duties in the maintenance and repair of 20,000 pounds per hour water tube boilers with multi-stage duplex steam and electric boiler feed water pumps, accumulator tank, electronic and pneumatic controls and recorders, refrigerated air driers and condensate transfer pumps. The Incumbent works on equipment using natural gas.
The Incumbent must know the complete operation of the Energy Management System including thermal storage systems, heat recovery systems and controls. He/she will install, maintain, and calibrate both electronic and pneumatic controls such as relays, humidistat's, temperature controls, solenoid valves, chiller water valves, steam valves and other components used in conjunction with air conditioning, refrigeration and heating system.
The Incumbent will be working with voltage from 24V AC and DC to 480V AC and with 1-phase and 3-phase. The Incumbent shall have the capability to install and service electric motors from 1/6 HP to 35 HP. These are used on air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and exhaust systems.
In air conditioning operation, the Incumbent must be qualified to serve as an Operator in the operation of all air conditioning, refrigeration, heating equipment and related components. The equipment consists of walk-in type refrigeration boxes and low temperature boxes, and ultra-low temperature boxes ranging in temperatures from -10 degrees to +50 degrees Fahrenheit in the pharmacy and lab areas. The Incumbent shall make necessary adjustments and record all findings such as compressor temperatures, water temperature, oil pressures, and other information pertinent to the safe and efficient operation of all equipment.
Specialized tools required to be used over the normal working tools of the trade are: vibration analyzer, electronic thermometer, hydro thermograph recorder, metal brakes, Bridgeport machine, hydraulic punch and riveter, multi-meters, Wheatstone bridge, psychrometer, volometer, voltmeter, amp meter, electronic and pneumatic service and calibrating test kit and test gauges. Must be able to perform air balance using a hood and have the ability to perform water chemistry on cooling towers and closed loop system to prevent legionella, other bacterial growth and galvanic erosion.

Physical Requirements: Strenuous physical effort is required while dismantling and reassembling equipment. The incumbent frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. The incumbent must work from ladders, scaffolding, etc., where parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard to reach places. Stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequently encountered for long periods of time. Hand dexterity is a critical requirement in completing most tasks.

Applicants MUST have a universal refrigerant processing license and a minimum 4 years HVAC experience.
