The Maintenance Mechanic performs tasks involved in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Martinsburg VAMC building services that include plumbing, laundry, kitchen, and steam piping systems. The incumbent will be initially assigned to the Mechanical Shop and may be required to work as a Maintenance Mechanic in the VAMC's laundry building.

Duties

Repairs and/or replaces kitchen equipment to include but not limited to; dishwashers, pot and pan machines, conveyor set-up lines, dirty dish conveyors and steam cookers. Weld either by electric or acetylene on different types of metal such as cast iron, steel, aluminum, or copper. Have the ability to braze and solder with and iron or torch to mend, repair, or install equipment. Install, modify, and/or repair new and existing utility systems to include but not limited to; fire sprinkler systems, sewage and gas systems, vacuum and high pressure air systems, high pressure steam distribution systems, condensate return systems, and potable water distribution systems. Install, modify and/or repair and adjust new and existing building utility equipment to include but not limited to ; waste closets, tubs, showers, lavatories, steam and hot water heating equipment, pressure reducing stations, circulating pumps, steam and electric water heaters. Work from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and layout routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of systems and equipment. Install, modify, and repair systems by locating and tapping main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level and slope. Determine and install valves, traps, and unions needed for the proper operation of systems. Must become certified, through station training, in ASSE Medical and Gas Maintenance 6040 and Medical Gas Installer 6010. Wear half face or full face respirator when required for operations or repairs. Become certified as a WV Groundwater Distribution Operator. Perform daily rounds on equipment and records readings in accordance with policies and procedures. Perform troubleshooting and diagnostics on all equipment as assigned and make repairs as necessary and required. Work Schedule: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD06736A Physical Requirements: Regular walking tours of the main hospital and out building to conduct inspections of equipment which include some lifting, kneeling, standing, climbing and stooping. Maintenance and repairs frequently require manual labor and working in awkward and cramped positions in places such as attics and interstitial areas and lifting up to 50 pounds. Frequent standing, walking, and climbing are required while checking equipment.
