The employee will serve as a Maintenance Mechanic at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, WV. The employee will perform tasks involved in the operation, maintenance and repair of building services that include plumbing, laundry, kitchen and steam piping systems. The employee will also be initially assigned to the Mechanical Shop and may be required to work as a Maintenance Mechanic in the medical center's laundry building.

Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Installs, modifies and repairs plumbing systems. Conducts inspections and performs routine maintenance on area of responsibility assigned. Performs welding duties using electric and wire feed, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes to weld various types of metal in various sizes, shapes and thickness. Plans and measures material according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions. Lays out and installs valves, traps and unions needed for proper plumbing systems. Utilizes written work orders with or without sketches and/or blueprints to carry out work. Performs preventative maintenance on shop tools and equipment to ensure safe and proper function. Oversees the requisition of materials, tools and equipment as necessary to perform assigned duties. Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, inspects, modify and/or repair valves, traps and unions needed for the operation of systems. Installs, modify and repair systems by locating and tapping main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level and slope. Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, inspects, modify and/or repair and adjust new and existing building utility equipment to include but not limited to: water closets. showers, lavatories, steam and hot water heating equipment, pressure reducing stations, circulating pumps, steam and electric water heaters, automatic roll-up doors, lighting and light bulb replacements. Maintains, troubleshoots, inspects, modify and/or repair and adjust electrical and electronic control systems associated with all laundry buildings services such as: linen carts, monorail hoist systems, linen and trash chute controls and equipment. Preforms at a journeyman level. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The duties of this position require considerable movement around the hospital and involve bending, lifting, crawling through restrictive areas and working from ladders, scaffolding and platforms both in- and outside buildings. The Maintenance Mechanic must frequently lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing 50 pounds or more with proper equipment. Assignments may require standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. WORK CONDITIONS: The Maintenance Mechanic works in all areas throughout the medical center. Inside areas may be dirty, dusty and greasy and contain bad odors. The Maintenance Mechanic is: subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds; exposed to moderately high noise levels; exposed to dust, fumes and dirt; exposed to possible strains, cuts, electrical shock, bruises, burns and infections; occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Outside duties are performed in all types of weather. The use of protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, gloves, clothing and safety equipment is required as needed. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
