These positions are located in Mount Rainier National Park, in the Division of Visitor & Resources Protection. Anticipated Entry on Duty: November 2023 These positions are full-time temporary appointments, not-to-exceed one year with potential to be extended for an additional one year for a maximum of two years based on agency needs and potential funding.

Duties

Major Duties: Conducts law enforcement patrols and investigations, along with backcountry patrols using either skis or snowshoes and assist with winter operations; conducts search and rescue to the level of their training; responds to wildland fires. Knowledge of criminal and constitutional law. Uses restraint devices and self-defense. Provides emergency medical care as an emergency medical technician (EMT) or higher. Performs the full range of law enforcement duties including investigating misdemeanors and felonies, traffic accidents, poaching activities, issuing violation notices, making arrests, appearing in court and preparing reports. This position is subject to night shift work, holiday and/or weekend work as well as staffing of 24-hour shifts during emergencies. Prior to appointment, the people selected for these positions must be determined physically fit by an authorized physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties, pass a medical examination, and pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB). The PEB is a fitness test consisting of five different components: 1) agility run - measures the ability to get up from the ground and sprint while changing directions; 2) bench press - measures upper body strength for one repetition; 3) 1.5 mile run - measures cardio/respiratory fitness; 4) sit and reach - measures flexibility in the lower back, legs and shoulders; and 5) body composition - measures body fat. Prior to appointment, selectees will be tested in all five components, and must pass the agility run, bench press and 1.5 mile run in the 25th percentile. Mount Rainier National Park is located in southeast Pierce County and northeast Lewis County. The park encompasses 236,381 acres; it rises abruptly from the surrounding land with elevations in the park ranging from 1,600 feet to over 14,400 feet. Over two million people visit Mount Rainier National Park each year. Eatonville Washington is the closest community providing a medical clinic and grocery store 32 miles from Longmire. All services can be found in Puyallup 56 miles from Longmire. Paradise receives on average 640" of snow annually. Longmire Duty Station: Housing is available in the park at Longmire or at Park Headquarters near the community of Ashford, Washington. Housing options are efficiency, 1- and 2-bedroom apartments or 3-bedroom Mission 66 style houses.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/12/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. Must currently possess or be able to obtain by closing date a valid state driver's license in good standing. - AND - Applicants must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS/GL-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience performing law enforcement duties for the protection, conservation, use, and management of natural and/or cultural resources in park areas or similar operations, which involved the application of law enforcement authorities and procedures to protect visitors and resources. Law enforcement duties include apprehending, detaining, and firearm experience. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full academic year of graduate education in a directly-related field such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement, police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. One year of full-time graduate education is defined as 18 semester hours. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. Only graduate education can be credited towards the education requirement. For example, 6 months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and 9 semester hours of graduate level college study in a directly related field of study (50% of the related coursework required) may qualify at the GS-07. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education

Law Enforcement Commission: This position requires applicants to possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to possess by 09/12/2023 a valid Type II (seasonal) or higher level National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission (or equivalent), which requires completing training from an accredited institution, which currently consists of over 650 class hours and lasts on average 17 weeks.
