We protect and secure Congress so it can fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities in a safe, secure and open environment.

As a USCP Sergeant, you serve as a first level supervisor and will be responsible for the following police officer duties:

Qualifications

Sergeant Promotional Process: To be eligible to apply for the Sergeant promotional process, candidates must have been appointed to the United States Capitol Police (USCP) on or before August 1, 2020, and: Candidates must hold the rank of Private First Class or Technician on or before August 1, 2023, and meet the same eligibility requirements for promotion to the rank of Private First Class as stated in Directive 2052.007, Designation as Private First Class. Candidates must not have been in a non-duty status for more than 30 consecutive days between August 1, 2020, and August 1, 2023, unless otherwise authorized by law (e.g., performance of duty injury, Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), or Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA)). Candidates must not have any Departmental documentation that specifically limits their eligibility to participate in the promotional process by the close of the vacancy announcement. The final promotion list will be certified by HumRRO, and will be used for promotions at the rank of Sergeant. The Chief of Police, at his discretion, may elect not to select a candidate for reasons such as, but not limited to, unsatisfactory job performance; sustained serious misconduct; funding, operational requirements; and/or pending investigations, either internal or external.
