This position is located at the VA Medical Center in Northport, New York, performing a wide range of motor vehicle operations/gardening work and is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the Medical Center grounds.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Maintains landscape in a healthy, disease-free, and attractive condition;
Performs special gardening or grounds maintenance functions in any are of the facility;
Performs lawn mowing, edging, bed weed control, seeding, leaf collection, aerating trees, etc.;
Transports patients, medical supplies, equipment and other vehicles within and off the grounds of the facility;
Participates in snow removal operations;
Operates a variety of gardening tools and equipment;
Drives a motor vehicle both on and off station following all applicable laws;
Maintains accurate, up-to-date records on work performed, such as fertilizer and pesticide usage schedules;
Operates various vehicles and equipment;
Performs preventative maintenance on all assigned vehicles and equipment;
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing powered equipment such as lawn mowers, bending and stooping. May be required to climb ladders to prune or trim and frequently lift, move or raise heavy objects such as bags of grass seed, fertilizer, etc. Assigned to other than normal tours of duty such as morning/late shifts, weekends and holidays to provide food delivery to the Community Living Centers. Works outside in all types of inclement weather and is exposed to dirt, dust and mud. Protective clothing such as gloves?, safety goggles', boots and shoes will be worn in keeping with directives set forth in safety standards for the various work tasks.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
