About the Position: Serves as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic in the Maintenance Division responsible for the troubleshooting, repair, overhaul, modification, adjustment and alignment on a variety of heavy duty and heavy mobile firefighting and emergency equipment.
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for DoD Certain Competitive Service Positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Duties
Serves as an Emergency Vehicle Technician who has overall responsibility for performing the full scope of maintenance and repairs of Emergency Vehicle Equipment.
Repairs and services a variety of firefighting and emergency equipment.
Inspects and repairs a variety of heavy mobile equipment, powered support systems.
Responsible for trouble shooting hard to locate problems, identifies defects and cause of mechanical problems.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- The position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
- The position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter.
- Must currently possess a valid commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with P endorsement or CDL Class A at the time of entrance on duty.
- Position requires the incumbent to possess or be able to obtain and maintain Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission (EVT) Level II.
- Certifications include EVT-F1 Inspection, Maintenance and Testing of Fire Apparatus, EVT- F2 Design and Performance Standards, EVT- F3 Fire Pumps and Accessories, EVT- F4 Electrical Systems.
- Certification in ASE T2- Truck, Diesel Engines, T3- Truck, Drive Train, T4- Truck, Brakes, T5- Truck, Suspension and Steering, T6- Truck, Electrical Systems, requirement within one year of employment.
- This standard is considered eligible and qualified as an emergency vehicle technician and shall apply to personnel who are engaged in the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and testing of emergency response vehicles.
- This position requires a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) background investigation.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic (Direct Hire Authority) ~ without more than normal supervision. Ability to inspect, diagnose, repair and/or replaces components in drive trains, suspensions, fuel systems, electrical systems, air systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, and all other systems found on fire trucks and other emergency vehicle equipment. Skilled in using hand tools of the trade to repair starting switches, injector pumps, sensors, brakes, and hydraulic systems, foam apparatus systems, and fire apparatus components - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: Heavy mobile equipment repairers at the grade 12 level work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. They work on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. They perform strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. They frequently lift and carry items, unassisted, weighing up to 60 pounds, and often exert similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. They frequently lift and move heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. They are sometimes required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights.
Working Conditions: Heavy mobile equipment repairers at the grade 12 level work both inside and outside. When inside, they are frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, they sometimes work in bad weather, in mud or snow, and in wet or icy areas. Both inside and outside, workers are exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes. They typically work on parts and systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy. They are subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. They follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone - no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
