The Lead Interventional Radiography Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist position is located in Medical Imaging at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center and is directly supervised by Supervisory Radiologic Technologist. The Lead DRT (IR) serves as the coordinator for the Interventional Radiology Section of the Medical Imaging Service, a highly complex imaging section which employs the use of Fluoroscopic Radiography to guide various devices inserted into the patient for diagnosis and intervention.

Duties

Responsible for the orderly flow of patients throughout this section. This includes reviewing for prompt scheduling of patients by the nursing staff assigned and being thoroughly knowledgeable of all protocols to answer inquiries from physicians, staff radiologists, IR technologists, staff radiologic technologists, nurses and other personnel regarding all aspects of IR imaging. Manages the quality control assurance programs within the IR section, including any maintenance or calibrations of the IR systems performed by Bio-med. Must work collaboratively with the supervisor, Director of radiology and other management team to achieve the department goals. Demonstrates complete and thorough knowledge in conducting appropriate preventive maintenance of the IR equipment and supportive equipment. Serves as a liaison with all levels of management pertaining to the IR section and executes actions which will guarantee quality image results. Monitors technologists' performance and attendance and instructs and reviews all IR technologists' imaging results to ensure that the utmost quality of diagnostic imaging is generated. The incumbent reports any discrepancies to the DRT Supervisor. *Manages the staff IR Technologists of the Medical Imaging Service and is responsible for assignment schedule, work area, and quality control. *The Lead IR Technologist functions as the subject matter expert regarding the software and hardware capability and performance of the IR systems, and advises on sequences, necessary acquisition parameters for optimum images, and greatest efficiency in data collection. Recommends improvement or modifications in the imaging protocols to the DRT Supervisor and is directly involved in maintaining and updating the IR policy and procedure protocols. *The Lead IR Technologist will resolve individual staff problems under his/her sphere of responsibilities and will oversee the maintenance of the IR suite to ensure cleanliness, proper mechanical operation, execution of infectious control policy, and maintenance of supply levels required for each exam. *The Lead IR Technologist will perform all major duties, as outlined in the lower grade IR technologist position description. This includes coordinating the scheduling of patients for examinations, evaluating the nature of critical or emergency procedures, maintaining a record of patient studies and examinations performed, interviewing each patient they are assigned to before the examination to determine if the patient has contraindications for IR studies. Maintains archives of procedures by ensuring that all images have been transferred to PACs. Coordinates daily schedule and consults with hospital physicians, clinical and administrative personnel pertaining to the next and future scheduling days' availability for patient examinations. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.] Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (IR), GS-0647-11 Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-10) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies needed to provide services as a quality control technologist, DRT team leader, supervisory radiologic technologist, [PACS technologist, clinical program director], or an assistant chief radiologic technologist. Assignments: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (IR). The technologist functions as a lead technologist for a group of DRTs at the GS-10 level and below. The technologist performs a full range of general radiologic treatment procedures and possesses broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area. The technologist is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. [Interventional Radiography (IR): Technologists working in this special assignment may function as vascular interventional (VI), cardiac interventional (CI) and/or cardiovascular-interventional (CV) technologists which use specialized equipment to perform diagnostic angiographic procedures and complex vascular and nonvascular interventional and therapeutic procedures. This specialty requires additional knowledge of vascular systems and major vessel anatomy. The technologist must be knowledgeable in the specialized equipment employed for digital subtraction systems and interventional procedures. The technologist administers contrast media under the supervision of the staff radiologist and confers with the radiologist to establish requirements regarding contrast agents, vital signs, medications, and physiologic monitoring to perform procedures. IR technologist must be knowledgeable in digital imagining and PACS.] AND, Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: AND demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): 1. *Skill in directing on-the-job training for employees. 2. *Ability to evaluate work performance of lower level employees and recommend performance ratings. 3. *Skill in technical planning and oversight to set and adjust work priorities, and [ensure] that work requirements are met based on employee capabilities. 4. Ability to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including knowledge of growth and development. 5. *Knowledge of medical center, VHA, and government-wide human resources management regulations, policies, and procedures. Preferred Experience: Strong Interventional Radiography (IR) and Lead experience preferred.
