This position is located within the Laundry Service at the VA Boston Healthcare System in Brockton, MA.

Duties

The major duties include but are not limited to: Operates and performs operator maintenance on one or more motor vehicles including pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, straight-in-line trucks which typically have approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 14,400 to 80,000 lbs.; Drives tractor-trailers or trucks and full trailer combinations, couple and uncouple the truck tractor and semi-trailer or truck and trailer and connects and disconnects the airlines and electrical lines; Maneuvers vehicles within close tolerances when driving and backing over uneven ground and in narrow or congested areas, between buildings and other vehicles and at other vehicles at loading docks; Directs the arranging of cargo, sometimes assist in the operation to spread the load for best support, loads own vehicles and ensures the proper unloading sequence; Checks to make sure the cargo is secured to prevent shifting or falling while in transit and to minimize the possibility of vehicle sway; Selects the safest, most direct and legally allowed route to be followed and identifies alternative routes which may be used if emergency situations arise; Operates vehicles on the interstate highways, winding roads and steep grades and manipulates the dual braking system to prevent the semi-trailer or trailer from jackknifing; Operates safely in inclement weather including snow and heavy rainfall; Operates on long distance trips which usually involves interstate driving and night driving; Transports supplies, materials or equipment and tools or tows equipment throughout rural or urban areas, ensuring the load is properly distributed and balanced to prevent shifting and breakage while in transit; Studies the planned itinerary and selects the best routes and identifies alternative routes for emergencies; Frequently maneuvers the tractor-trailer through congested, narrow streets with sharp turns; and, Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. REQUIREMENT -COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE (SCREEN OUT): A current and valid state-issued Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for this position. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your CDL driver's license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your current and valid state-issued Class A Commercial Driver's License. Physical Effort and Work Conditions: Drivers at this grade may exert moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on the tractor to hook-up service lines, lower landing gears, climbing on the trailer to load or tie down cargo, and make limited emergency repairs such as replacing an electrical fuse or installing air in the tires on an open highway. May have to break ice pack and snow from couplings during all inclement weather. Must be able to climb into backs of trucks, lift and maneuver dock plates for safe loading and unloading. Must be able to push and pull carts onto trucks, carts weigh in excess of 800 pounds (on casters). Loading and unloading up to 32 carts at one facility.Operates the vehicle in all types of traffic, weather and in other types of driving conditions and may be exposed to the dangers of serious accidents. Drives in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road construction and interchanging systems. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume. You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Drive SafelyHandle Weights and LoadsWithout more than normal supervision IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
