This position is located at the Crownpoint Healthcare Facility, Crownpoint, NM and reports to the Supervisory Optometrist. The incumbent provides primary eye care technical assistance to the Optometrists. The employee performs difficult and advanced ophthalmic procedures independently and assists the eye care providers in the examination and treatment of patients to increase the overall efficiency of the department.

Duties

Performs screenings to include: visual acuity, confrontation fields, extra-ocular muscle movements, pupillary reaction, interpupillary distance measurements, lens neutralization manual and automated. Performs screening which includes taking a case history on all patients and demonstrating competency in interviewing all ages. Assist the eye care professional in the examination as required. Provides and assists in one-to-one, group and community patient education relative to optical and ocular disease conditions. Performs complicated frame measurements, verifies spectacle prescriptions, repairs most damaged frames and performs basic optical bench work. Meets and greets patients, directs patient flow, schedules appointments, answers telephones, takes messages, transfers telephone calls, responds to patient inquiries, assists patients with referrals, medication requests, pre-op and post-op information and questions regarding clinic policies and procedures. Collects data and performs chart reviews for performance improvements projects, maintaining logs, and preparing for chart audits.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: performing tests requested by eye professional, such as, but not limited to visual fields, goldman applanation tonometry, tonopen tonometry, color vision, depth perception, pachymetry, autorefraction, amsler grid testing, sphygmomanometer, temperature reading and random blood sugar evaluation; performing selected eye care test while understanding the protocol without direct supervision, assistance or intervention from the optometrist; performing retinal photography to assist the optometrist with photo-documentation and optic nerve tomography to assist with glaucoma management or other diseases; proper use of pharmacological agents, diagnosis, prognosis, eye wear use and adaption and contact lens education. OR One full year of graduate education in an area of study directly related to the work of this position; OR A combination of education and specialized experience listed above. One year of graduate education is equivalent to 18 semester hours. NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree meets the requirements for GS-9. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
