The position is located in the Division of Intramural Research (DIR), Translational Vascular Medicine Branch (TVMB), Lipoprotein Metabolism Laboratory (LML).
Duties
As a Biologist, you will:
Participate with the Principal Investigator in managing the day-to-day operating of the laboratory, including coordinating activities of diverse laboratory research projects and personnel, and ensuring availability of equipment and supplies.
Coordinate a research effort in support of a Principal Investigator's research program, or provide unique and highly specialized skills in a significant research area, as a team member.
Participate in the planning and design of basic, preclinical, clinical, or epidemiological research project within a Principal Investigator's research program. Independently plan, develop, and implement experiments and protocols. Recommend modifications to methods and procedures to meet the experimental objectives, and establish new methods applicable to the research efforts of the Principal Investigator.
Provide technical expertise for substantial and effective contributions to research through scientific discussions with laboratory staff and collaborators, as well as actively teaching methods at the lab bench.
Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of the particular area of research throughout the life of the project, reviewing available literature on new methods and techniques for potential application within the laboratory. Consistently build up proficiency and expertise in the field of research, studies and evaluate literature related to the laboratory research, incorporating new techniques as they become available.
Be responsible for conducting independent research, presentation, and submission for publication in peer reviewed journals. Analyze and interpret data and prepare summaries of laboratory findings in final form for publication in reports and papers to be presented at scientific meetings and/or publication in scientific journals. Prepare or participate in preparing manuscripts, abstracts, and results. Evaluate, interpret, and present research results to other scientists in the Principal Investigator's group, lab seminars, and/or national/international scientific conferences and meetings.
Provide oversight, guidance, and training to collaborators, post-doctoral students and other students, and laboratory personnel in the use of sophisticated laboratory equipment and in the performance of specialized procedures/techniques, etc. Provide supervision and training to technical staff, fellows, and/or contract staff on molecular biology, cell biology, genomics, specialized laboratory techniques, and use of complex equipment.
Be responsible for establishing and/or development of laboratory procedures and analysis and/or evaluation of research data independently, and collaborate in managing junior lab staff in supervisor or mentorship role.
Design appropriate experiments to solve current and newly emerging research questions. Prepare summaries of experiments, contribute to the evaluation and discussion of results. Study, adapt, and/or develop new techniques needed to answer new research questions.
Present original research at scientific meetings representing the Translational Vascular Medicine Branch to the research community.
Contribute as an author and co-author in the writing and preparation of scientific papers for publication in recognized journals, and present new research data in group settings, at meetings or seminars.

Qualifications
In order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-0401 position, you must have:
Completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university; OR
A combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.
AND You qualify at the GS-13 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: independently developing, planning, and implementing research; developing new methods for collecting, studying, assembling, or analyzing factual data; conducting comprehensive investigations; developing and preparing scientific reports, analytical interpretations, conclusions, or recommendations, typically for publication; using a variety of laboratory instruments to perform experiments; and assist in managing the day-to-day operation of a research laboratory, including coordinating activities of laboratory research projects and personnel, and ensuring availability of equipment and supplies.
