The Social Worker Emergency Department supervisor for the Northern Arizona Healthcare System Social Work Services provides oversight of the Emergency Department (ED) social workers, the emergency department and acute care social workers, other program GS 12 social work (SW) coordinators and additionally is assigned to provide support and assessment of psychosocial functioning and factors impacting Veteran overall health and functioning. **Relocation/Recruitment Incentives May be Authorized**

VA Careers - Social Work: https://youtube.com/embed/enRhz_ua_UU The Emergency department Services Social Worker supervisor must possess the knowledge and ability to independently assess and implement treatment modalities, identify level of functioning, degree of impairment in occupational, social, academic, interpersonal and family, evaluate and assess lethality, perform mental status exams (MSE), identify psychiatric manifestations of various medical conditions, possess knowledge of the criteria and state laws for legal commitment and involuntary hospitalizations, ability to assess and intervene with patients suspected of abuse or neglect. In addition, the Social Work ED supervisor has working knowledge and experience in use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures in working with diverse populations and circumstances. This includes emergency department, chronic, and traumatic illnesses/injuries, psychiatric, medical, and social problems, common medications and their effects/side effects and medical terminology. Additionally the incumbent functions as the social work supervisor and program manager for the social workers in Emergency department and Acute Care in addition to GS 12 SW coordinators. The will serve as the clinical and administrative supervisor of staff including but not limited to the emergency department care social workers, acute care social workers and other GS 12 coordinator Social Worker staff. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Demonstrating specialized skills in dealing with complex medical and mental health patients and able to provide specialized interventions and treatment modalities, and has expanded knowledge around crisis intervention skills and implementation and the provision of social work services in inpatient emergency department care settings. The Social Work ED supervisor of emergency department social work services is experienced in making rapid assessments and developing crisis management plans. The incumbent has knowledge of multiple resources to meet the demands of a crisis. The incumbent will assess for completion of suicide risk screening and assessments that include the assessment of suicidal/homicidal thoughts and behaviors, and support the Veteran in completing a suicide safety plan and will engage in consultation with the Emergency Department and mental health providers. The incumbent may also be consulted regarding allegations of abuse and neglect and will follow the established protocols including reporting and educating interdisciplinary team members on mandatory reporting to Elder and Child Protective Service agencies as necessary and clinically appropriate. Acts as the subject matter expert on VA and community resources and is responsible for educating the Veteran and/or caregiver of available services and assisting them in establishing appropriate referrals based on the Veteran's preference or that of their surrogate decision-maker, and provides a variety of services for Veterans referred from the Emergency Department including detox/residential treatment referrals, discharge planning, comprehensive psychosocial assessments, treatment planning, short-term solution focused counseling with individuals and families in crisis, provides education and referral for resources and benefits, case management, and post intervention follow-up. Enters all Veteran/family contacts in the electronic record system using appropriate formats and templates and are to enter consults and make assessments based on their Advanced level of licensure. Attends all appropriate meetings (interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, Social Work Service staff meetings, other committees, or workgroups as appropriate, etc.) and perform other duties as required. The incumbent may engage in program development needs to include the development and modification of existing, and new, Standard Operation of Care (SOP) policies and procedures to meet the needs of the department. Is responsible for oversight and supervisor of social workers providing services in the emergency department care areas as well as other social workers who might be providing services considered to be emergency department. In this capacity the incumbent carries out supervisory responsibilities, in consultation with Chief of Social Work that includes identification, development, evaluation and communication of standards, policies and procedures to subordinates. The incumbent has responsibility for coordinating interdisciplinary work assignments. The incumbent must be able to provide supervision for licensure, and other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Basic Requirements Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. Licensure: Candidate must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Education: Master's degree in social work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for master's degree in social work. Preferred Experience: Grade Determinations: GS-12 Supervisory Social Worker Experience: In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must have at least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. In addition to the experience above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines. Knowledge of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision, consultation, negotiation with other departments and quality improvement. Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services. Ability to provide staff training and development. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers Assignment: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and variety and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. At the GS-12 grade level, supervisory social workers typically have significant personnel management responsibilities for a small to moderate sized professional and non-professional staff, including support staff and professional staff at the GS-12 grade level and below. The supervisory social worker is responsible for the professional and administrative management of an area in a social work service, in a care/product line, or multiple facilities. They provide direct clinical services with or without program coordination responsibilities. References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G39 - Social Worker Qualification Standard. Physical Requirements: The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, training rooms, and libraries. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The incumbent must also work outdoors in all types of weather. There may be occasional exposure to moderate risks or discomforts in storage areas or hazardous waste sites. The work is primarily sedentary, although some physical effort may be required, e.g., walking, standing, climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, and carrying light items such as manuals or briefcases, or driving or traveling by motor vehicle.
