The employee serves a Medical Laboratory Technician performing a wide variety of laboratory tests on blood, urine, and other body fluids for the Pathology and Laboratory Medical Service Line. This position functions within the Veterans Administration at Eastern Colorado Health Care System and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** The employee performs a variety of laboratory disciplines, including Chemistry, Urinalysis, Hematology, Coagulation and Microbiology. Duties include but may not be limited to: Enter and verify results in computer databases such as Laboratory Information System (LIS) system., Follow proper infectious disease controls and uses correct Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE). Maintain a clean work environment including defrosting and cleaning freezers and refrigerators, cleaning the biological hood, emptying biohazard trash, and cleaning bench tops and centrifuges daily. Receive, validate, process and distribute specimens to the proper laboratory section for testing. Accurately enter all data entered into an automated data processing (ADP) system and ensure ADP security for computer/computer system access. Recognize and report inconsistencies in laboratory data and confirm abnormal results. Manage problems and deviation in work assignments in accordance with the standard practice and written procedures. Assist patients, visitors, and others requesting information, guidance or referral for special assistance. Interpret and explain policies to staff, patients, employees, and others. Maintain laboratory stock and orders materials, as needed. Calibrate and maintain laboratory instrumentation on timely intervals to minimize breakdown and delay of procedures. Perform other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 3:30pm - 11:30pm with rotating weekends and holidays. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the following: English Language Proficiency - In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of this GS-07 Medical Technician (Chemistry) position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-06). Specialized experience is technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; or technical support work in a closely related field (e.g., biological laboratory technician work), that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. We will not make assumptions regarding experience.) -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of this position as a Medical Technician for a Chemistry department. NOTE TO APPLICANTS: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study; if that number cannot be obtained from the transcript, 18 semester hours will be considered as one full academic year of graduate study. -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of experience and graduate education as described above, fully meet the qualification requirement of this position. A Quality Ranking Factor has also been requested by the facility to help determine which of the basically qualified applicants are likely to be better qualified for a position. Quality Ranking Factors are skills, knowledge, abilities, or other worker characteristics which could be expected to result in superior performance on the job. Quality ranking factors will not be used for screening but may be used as ranking criteria. Applicants with higher proficiency levels may rank above those with lower proficiency levels on a quality ranking factor. The quality ranking factor for this position is: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: Employee must be able to perform moderate lifting up to 20 pounds, straight pulling, pushing, reaching above the shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walking, standing for up to 4 hours, kneeling, repeated bending, use of both arms and legs. Specific visual requirements include the use of both eyes, depth perception, ability to distinguish colors and shades of colors, hearing (aids permitted), clear, high cognitive function and emotional stability: ability to read ordinary type without strain. The work requires repetitive motions during computer entry, and specimen handling and processing. The demand for accuracy and timeliness in completing required testing is a responsibility which requires the ability to work under various degrees of stress.
